Former Premier League midfielder Joey Barton appeared in court on Tuesday after being charged with causing grievous bodily harm with intent last month.

Joey Barton has pleaded not guilty to charges of causing grievous bodily harm with intent in an alleged assault near a Merseyside golf club last month.
The former Premier League footballer was arrested along with Gary O’Grady following the incident near Huyton and Prescot Golf Club on Sunday, March 8. The alleged victim, former non-league football coach Kevin Lynch, was taken to hospital in serious but stable condition.
Mr Barton, who was remanded in custody after appearing at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court on March 10, remains in custody and will face a seven-day trial starting September 1. Mr O’Grady is scheduled for a further hearing on June 3.

Merseyside Police confirmed the charges in a statement: “We can confirm that two men have been charged following an assault that occurred in Huyton on Sunday night, March 8th.
“Around 9pm, emergency services were called to Fairway after reports of a man being assaulted near Huyton and Prescott Golf Club.
“The victim sustained serious injuries to his face and body and was taken to the hospital for evaluation. He is in serious but stable condition at the hospital.”
“Two men have been arrested. Detectives have now charged the following men with wounding with intent under Section 18: Joseph Anthony Burton, 43, of Fox Bank Close, Widnes, and Gary O’Grady, 50, of Seal Road, Huyton.
“Both individuals remain in custody this afternoon to appear in court on Tuesday, March 10th.”
