Manchester United have announced that Harry Maguire has signed a new one-year contract, ending speculation over his future. Maguire, 33, is in the final months of his existing contract and was due to leave as a free agent this summer.

However, the England international has been given a new contract until June 2027 following his resurgence under caretaker manager Michael Carrick. United also have the option to extend his contract for a further year.

Maguire said: “Representing Manchester United is the greatest honor. It is a responsibility that I am proud of for myself and my family every day.”

“I am delighted to be able to extend my career at this great club for at least eight seasons, continue to play in front of our special supporters and create even more great moments together.

“You can feel the ambition and potential of this exciting team. The determination across the club to fight for major trophies is clear for all to see and we are confident that together our best moments remain ahead of us.”

Carrick has been a mainstay since taking over in January, and his form has helped the Red Devils rise to third place in the Premier League. Maguire has also been called up to the England squad and is in contention to qualify for the World Cup.

The centre-back joined United from Leicester City in 2019 for a record-breaking £80m. Maguire was appointed club captain by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer less than a year into his stay, but was replaced by Bruno Fernandes in 2023 during Erik ten Hag’s reign.

Director of Football Jason Wilcox added: “Harry embodies the mentality and resilience needed to perform at Manchester United. He is the ultimate professional who brings valuable experience and leadership to our young and ambitious team. Harry, like everyone at the club, is fully committed to helping Manchester United achieve regular and sustained success.”

Maguire has been one of the most influential figures in United’s squad, helping them win two trophies in recent years: the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup. Earlier this season, Carrick described the 33-year-old and his experience as “invaluable”.

“Harry is an impressive character,” said the Red Devils manager. “He’s had a great career so far and hopefully there’s a lot more to come. I think even in his time here, in his journey and experiences, he’s definitely shown what he is since he’s been here and also with England.”

Carrick added: “The experience is huge. It’s hard to put a price on that value. Harry has gained so much experience at this club. Case leaving is another thing and we need to understand what that means.”

Maguire is currently in Dublin as part of a training camp with the rest of United’s squad, making the most of the long period without games. Carrick’s side return to action at home to Leeds on Monday, but Maguire is suspended following his red card against Bournemouth on March 20.
