Arsenal football icon Aaron Ramsey has announced his retirement. The midfielder capped off a brilliant career by shining in Wales’ run to the Euro 2016 semi-finals, earning him a place in UEFA’s Team of the Tournament.

He also scored the winning goal in the FA Cup final against Arsenal, where he spent more than a decade. The 35-year-old has not been with the club since parting ways with Mexican side Pumas in December and has not featured for the team since September.

Due to lack of regular activity with the first team and injury problems, the midfielder has not played for his country since September 2024. The former Juventus player had previously expressed his desire to represent Wales at this summer’s World Cup if he qualified, but the recent defeat to Bosnia dashed those dreams.

As a result, Ramsey, who started his career at Cardiff City, has decided to retire. “This was not an easy decision,” he said in a statement.

“After much consideration, I have decided to retire from football. I would like to start with Wales.

“It has been my privilege to wear the Wales shirt and experience so many great moments in it. It would not have been possible without the great cooperation of all the managers I have played for and all the staff who have helped me in various ways.”

“To the Red Wall. You were there through the hard times and the hard times! You were there through the good times and the bad, and you were an integral and integral part of our success.

“I can’t thank you enough. We’ve been through everything together, and it’s been an honor to represent you, Diolci.

“Secondly, I would like to thank all the clubs I have been lucky enough to play for. I would like to thank all the coaches and staff who have helped me realize my dream and play at the highest level.”

“And a huge thank you to my wife and kids and my entire family. None of this would have been possible without you by my side.”

Ramsey came through Cardiff’s youth organization before joining the first team in 2007 at the age of just 16, making him the youngest player in Cardiff’s history. After helping them reach the 2008 FA Cup final, he moved to Arsenal where he enjoyed the most successful period of his career.

He then moved to Juventus, Rangers and Nice before eventually returning to Cardiff before moving to Mexico. His international career with Wales was also exceptional.

Since making his debut for Wales in 2008, he has won 86 caps for his country, appearing in two European Championships and one World Cup. He also represented Great Britain at the 2012 Olympics.
