Jamie Carragher has praised Liverpool’s consistency as they prepare for life without one of their greatest players ever after Mohamed Salah announced he would leave at the end of the season.

Jamie Carragher said Mohamed Salah’s durability was his greatest attribute as the Liverpool legend reflected on the career of “one of the greatest players to ever play for the club”.
And Carragher, who played 737 games for the Reds, told the ECHO that Liverpool may need to consider a different type of player in their search for Salah’s replacement.
Salah, the club’s third all-time top scorer with 255 goals, joined from Roma in the summer of 2017 for around £36 million and revealed last month that this season would be his last at Anfield.
The Egyptian captain enjoyed fairytale magic on Merseyside, winning two Premier League titles, the Champions League, two Carabao Cups, the 2022 FA Cup and the Reds’ first Club World Cup in December 2019.

Salah has appeared in 436 of Liverpool’s 496 games since joining, and 323 of his 335 Premier League appearances.
Carragher, who won the Champions League in 2005, praised Salah’s ability to feature regularly as one of his main strengths, although his goalscoring record speaks for itself.
“It was interesting to hear Jurgen Klopp talking about him the other day. He gave me a bit of an insight into what Mo was probably thinking when he joined the club,” Carragher told the ECHO. “Actually, he was asking me where I was going to play.
“He was worried about where Sadio Mane would play on the right flank and that just goes to show where he went from there. He came in but wasn’t 100 per cent sure he would play in the team.”

“But I remember his debut at Watford. I was there. He definitely scored. You could tell right away that he was going to score because of his running. He was very impressive. But no one could have predicted what he would do then at Liverpool.”
“And, you know, one of the greatest players to play for the club and one of the greatest players in the world right now. How long has he been at Liverpool? Nine seasons. And I think it’s his consistency. And what I like is that he’s playing every week.”
“That’s something I’m proud of. When I look back at my career, I’m proud of that. Sometimes you need a little bit of luck with injuries and things like that, but what I like about him is that he plays every game, wants to play every game, tries to break records.

“He has that mentality, and I can tell you from being at Liverpool for so long that not every player has that. Some players like to have a few good games, but then they go out and don’t want to take a breather, and they’ve had three or four great games so far and they’ve almost taken a break.”
“And when they leave the team, someone will say, ‘Oh, I miss him.’ Because if you play every week, whatever it is, you’re there to get shot, you’re there for bad games, you’re there for Salah to miss his chances.
“And that’s the biggest thing for me, not his quality, but the fact that he’s there for Liverpool every week.”
The focus will now turn to how Liverpool go about finding players to fill the hole on the right flank, but Carragher believes there is no truly “irreplaceable” player at Anfield.
The former centre-half, who was part of Gerard Houllier’s team that won the League Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Cup 25 years ago, believes decision-makers at recruitment level may be looking to bring in a different style of winger.

Carragher added: “I would never agree with anyone saying they are irreplaceable. If you look at the players who have been at this football club over the years, whether you think he is a right-winger or not, to me he is a goalscorer and that is who he is.”
“And a few years before Mo Salah, we had Luis Suarez. Michael Owen, Robbie Fowler, you go back to the list, but of course I’m not saying it will be easy to replace him, but you might get a different type of right-winger, who is made for a central striker.”
“So I don’t think he’s irreplaceable and I don’t think Liverpool need to sign a superstar. Mo Salah wasn’t a superstar when we signed him. He came and wasn’t sure if he was going to play.
“We bought a superstar last summer, right? And so far it hasn’t quite worked out yet. You buy the right players for the right reasons. That’s what Liverpool need to get back to.”
