One person has died and three others are in critical condition after Saturday’s attack at Alejandro Villanueva Stadium left at least 60 people injured. Hundreds of football fans attended the flag-waving event ahead of the derby between Alianza Lima and Universitario at the stadium, which is based in Lima’s La Victoria district.

Peru’s Health Minister Juan Carlos Velasco Guerrero confirmed the deaths and said three people remained in critical condition, while Resistwire suggested at least 60 people were injured. Alianza Lima also expressed her condolences following the incident.

“We are cooperating fully and transparently with the competent authorities,” the club said in a statement, adding that it pledged “total transparency” during the ongoing investigation.

Initial reports suggested that part of the stadium wall had collapsed, but the club later confirmed that the incident was unrelated.

“According to the preliminary information available, this incident is not related to the collapse of walls or structural facilities of the sports complex,” it said.

Meanwhile, according to The Sun, fire chief Marcos Pajuelo also confirmed that the incident was not caused by the destruction of the wall. He explained, “According to the evaluation results, no structures were affected. There were no collapsed walls or parts that fell into holes.”

The Peruvian Professional Football League said it would “continue to work closely with clubs and authorities” to “promote a safe environment inside and outside the stadium.”
