Arne Slott’s role as Liverpool manager is not guaranteed beyond this season, but Jamie Carragher insists Anfield fans can’t just hope Jurgen Klopp returns

Jamie Carragher has called for another manager, Jurgen Klopp, to take over as manager, fearing that “Liverpool supporters are already acting like Manchester United fans”.

It has been almost two years since the Reds welcomed the German player, who they have been looking forward to winning the Premier League title with. He also won the Champions League and by the time he left, he was considered one of the club’s greatest ever managers.

He was replaced by Arne Slott, who won the title in his first year, but endured a notable slump in his second year. That has led to doubts over his future, which will only increase if he ends the season without a trophy and fails to qualify for the Champions League.

Carragher admits he feels the Anfield fan base wants someone like Klopp, comparing it to demands from Red Devils supporters to find the next Sir Alex Ferguson. However, the former Red insists that neither exists.

He wrote in the Telegraph: “My concern is that Liverpool supporters are already behaving in a similar way to United fans following Ferguson’s departure. They are eager to find the next Klopp, or a similarly charismatic figurehead, and will try to drop a number of good managers each season in the desperate hope of finding the next superstar.”

“There is no other Klopp. He was a one-off. His presence in last weekend’s game against Legends at Anfield was a reminder of his aura. It is because of the authority he had and the trust he built that Klopp was able to endure the difficult times during his reign at Anfield. Slot still does not have the same weight.”

Slott and Liverpool have started the year impressively, winning their opening five games. However, their hopes of retaining the title disappeared due to a slump in the middle of the season. They endured a terrible losing streak, losing 10 of 12 games in all competitions, including a humiliating defeat at Anfield.

Despite stopping that run of form, Liverpool are not immune to poor play from the slot and are still feeling inconsistent. Mr Carragher admits it is an issue that will continue to haunt him.

“The longer this situation drags on, the more I fear it will get worse. If Mr. Slott is a truly elite coach, why hasn’t he been able to reverse this season’s alarming decline?”

Slott recently completed his 100th game in charge, the highest of any manager in Liverpool’s history over this period. He is on a par with Kenny Dalglish, who also won 62 of his first 100 races.
