James Rodríguez missed out on the Colombian national team during the recent international break, but the country’s soccer federation has announced that he has been hospitalized and is receiving treatment in the United States.
Colombia announces James Rodriguez hospitalized
James-Rodriguez is being treated in Minnesota, where he is hospitalized for a “non-sports related medical condition.”
The Colombian player suffered from severe dehydration after the 3-1 loss to France. Rodriguez, who joined Minnesota United on a short-term deal earlier this year, played 63 minutes in a World Cup warm-up game in Landover, Maryland.
The former Real Madrid star did not show any symptoms until he returned to Minneapolis on Monday, but the country confirmed his symptoms were not related to a previous injury.
“The Colombian Football Federation, through its medical staff and the National Team Directorate, would like to inform the public and media about the health status of James Rodríguez, captain of the Colombian national team,” the statement read.
“We have contacted the Minnesota Medical Center and have confirmed that the midfielder is under specialized observation for a non-sport-related medical condition. The day after the game against France, the player developed severe dehydration and required hospitalization for the past 72 hours for preventive measures and monitoring of his recovery.”

“It is important to clarify that this situation is not related to a musculoskeletal injury, nor is it related to the development of his football activities. Fortunately, the current medical report indicates a favorable course and steady improvement. The Colombian national team medical staff maintains continuous and coordinated communication with Minnesota United FC and is closely monitoring his progress. FCF wishes James a speedy and full recovery.”
Rodriguez also played in the first game of the international break, playing more than an hour in a 2-1 loss to Croatia on March 26 in Orlando, Florida.

The Colombian has made just two substitute appearances for Minnesota so far this season. The MLS season resumes this weekend, with Rodriguez’s team taking on LA Galaxy. The 34-year-old has endured several years of wandering since being allowed to leave Madrid permanently.
He joined Los Blancos for £63 million in 2014 after his best performance at the summer’s World Cup. He moved to Everton in 2020, but headed to Qatar’s top flight a year later, playing for Al Rayyan. Rodriguez went on to play for Olympiakos, São Paulo and Rayo Vallecano, before eventually moving to the United States.
