Tensions escalated on Thursday during Fluminense’s 3-1 win over Corinthians when a player was shown a red card for making an obscene gesture towards a fellow player.

Alan Rodríguez de Sousa was sent off on Thursday after grabbing Lucho Acosta in the groin in a disturbing gesture during Fluminense’s 3-1 win over Corinthians. Already trailing 2-0 with goals from John Kennedy and Hercules, Corinthians’ day was made even worse with the midfielder initially booked after a showdown with the Fluminense playmaker.

The 29-year-old was seen shoving Acosta multiple times before both teams scrambled to resolve the incident. During the scuffle, a member of the Fluminense bench was shown a red card, after which Allan was seen shouting at his opponent and pointing at his crotch.

The referee, who was standing right next to Allan, appeared to have missed the gesture in real time, but was alerted by VAR. Officials then attended pitchside monitors to review the footage before returning to the playing field and ejecting the Brazilian.

Despite the red card, Fluminense won 3-1 at the Maracanã, with Rodrigo Castillo adding another goal in the 83rd minute before Andre grabbed a late consolation prize.

After the match, Corinthians coach Dorival Junior said Allan understood that his actions were wrong and that the matter would be discussed internally.

This is Allan’s third sending off in his professional football career, having picked up two more in 170 appearances for Atlético Mineiro between 2020 and 2023.

Liverpool fans may remember the player’s name from his five years at Anfield between 2015 and 2020.

However, Alan could not represent the club where he signed his first professional contract.

Instead, he spent his time with the Reds on loan at the likes of SJK, Sint-Truiden, Hertha BSC, Apollon Limassol, Eintracht Frankfurt and Fluminense before making a permanent move to Mineiro.

He moved to Flamengo in 2023 and joined Corinthians on loan this season.

Corinthians got off to a lackluster start in Brazil’s Serie A, but their efforts have paid off as they currently sit 11th in the league standings with two wins, four draws and three losses. They are nine points behind league leader Palmeiras.

Fluminense, on the other hand, are in second place in the league with 19 points, the same as Palmeiras, but the top team still has a Round 9 matchup against Gremio at home on Friday, April 3rd.
