Alexander Isak has been out of action for more than three months after breaking his leg against Tottenham in December, but Liverpool’s £125m signing brings him closer to a return.

Liverpool manager Arne Slott has confirmed that Alexander Isak will return to team training on Thursday. Isak, 26, has been sidelined since December after breaking his leg during Liverpool’s 2-1 win away to Tottenham.

The Sweden international missed his country’s recent World Cup play-off games as they looked to qualify for this summer’s tournament, but his absence has exacerbated Liverpool’s injury problems. However, Isak is close to making a comeback, having recently undertaken individual training, and could feature in Saturday’s FA Cup quarter-final away to Manchester City.

“I think Alex is in really good shape because Sweden qualified for the World Cup yesterday evening. Apart from that, he will train again with the group for the first time tomorrow,” Slott told club media on Wednesday.

“If you work hard for three or four months or something like that and then go back to training with the team, that’s very good for everyone. So Alex is in a good position in that sense.”

“Obviously, it’s only been his first session since he’s been in the team for three or four months, but we all know who we signed and we signed a great striker, so it’s good to have him back.”

“So having him back in a team that usually creates quite a lot of chances, maybe not immediately from the first moment he can start, but I think having him back for the last two months will be very beneficial for us.”

Meanwhile, Slott confirmed Jeremy Frimpong will be tested after being substituted just 12 minutes into the Netherlands trip on Tuesday. The Reds manager explained, “Jeremy, the Dutch national team doctor, said it was a precautionary measure to take him out. However, he will undergo tests later today.”

“Alison will be out for a little bit longer. And Federico (Chiesa) did come back from the national team, but he couldn’t play. But he was training with us today, so he’ll be training with us tomorrow too and will be available for the weekend’s game.”

As for Mo Salah, the Egyptian is “very close” to a return. Slott added: “Another example of why he’s special is because at the moment he got injured it was like, ‘I don’t think he’s going to be available for City.’

“But Mo looked at me and said, ‘I think I can play for City.'” He has done a lot for his body for a long time, so he recovered very quickly. So he’s going to train with the team again tomorrow and if everything goes well he’ll be able to spend some time with us. ”
