Manchester City won’t know Josep Guardiola’s next move until the end of the season, with the Catalan planning to postpone making a decision until after football is over

Manager Josep Guardiola is not expected to make any decision on Manchester City’s future until the end of the season, with the Catalan still considering ending his days at the Etihad.

The former Barcelona manager’s contract runs until the end of next season, but there is ongoing uproar over whether he will leave 12 months early. If so, we won’t know who is in charge of Manchester’s blue half until the end of the season.

According to a report in the Telegraph, Guardiola wants to assess the situation and his feelings in charge of City in May before deciding whether to remain in charge for a further 12 months. But as things stand, the 55-year-old has not made any serious decisions about his future.

City have rebuilt themselves at the Etihad after winning a historic fourth straight title. As manager Guardiola aims to revitalize the team, Marc Gehi, Antoine Semenyo and Rayan Cherki have all moved to the club.

The team remains in contention for the Premier League title, but are nine points behind Arsenal with a game in hand. They are in the FA Cup quarter-finals and have already won the Carabao Cup by defeating rivals Arsenal at Wembley.

The FA Cup final will be played on May 16th and the Premier League season ends on May 24th. City still have a chance of winning the domestic treble, but a few things will need to happen for them to do so. It remains to be seen whether this will encourage Guardiola to stay.

This uncertainty means City’s hierarchy will need to consider what they will do if Guardiola leaves. They must draw up a short list of possible replacements, which includes former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, former Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso and former player and Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany.

Hugo Viana, City’s relatively new director of football, will spearhead the search for a new manager, but is also leading the club’s transfer strategy. Some of the club’s targets will want peace of mind as to who their head coach will be before signing. City have some promising players who are out of contract, including captain Bernardo Silva.

Guardiola is the longest-serving manager in the Premier League by a slight margin. Under City’s current system, there has been little need to change players in the dugout. In nearly 20 years of ownership, they have only employed three managers: Roberto Mancini, Manuel Pellegrini and Guardiola.
