Italy’s players were devastated and they missed out on the World Cup for the third consecutive year. Gianluigi Donnarumma expressed his feelings on his social media.
Gianluigi Donnarumma lamented Italy’s failure
Gianluigi Donnarumma admitted he cried after missing out on yet another World Cup, but stressed his determination to “get Italy back where it belongs.” The Manchester City goalkeeper was part of another Azzurri team that missed out on the sport’s biggest tournament.
They lost to Bosnia and Herzegovina on penalties on Tuesday night. Italy lost 1-4 with Donnarumma unable to save a single spot kick. Italy took an early lead but were reduced to 10 men and Bosnia equalized in the second half and won for the second time on penalties in less than a week.
This means that Italy, who won the tournament in 2006, have missed out on the last three World Cups. Donnarumma remains one of the team’s key players, but despite making his debut in Italy at the age of 16, he will not play in a World Cup until he is at least 31 years old.
City’s goalkeeper said on Instagram: “Last night, after the game, I cried. I cried because of the disappointment of not being able to take Italy to where we should have been. I cried because of the great sadness that I feel along with the entire Azzurri team, of which I am proud to be captain. I know that the fans of the national team feel the same way right now.”

Italy has won the World Cup four times, and only Brazil has more than that total. However, in recent years, they have not even been able to compete on the world stage.
Azzurri lost to Bosnia and Herzegovina on penalties.
Sandwiched between the failures at the World Cup were victories in Europe. Donnarumma was named player of the match at Euro 2020 as Italy defeated England in the final on penalties.
They have not been able to reach those heights as Luciano Spalletti and Gennaro Gattuso have not been able to achieve similar success. Italian Football Federation (FIGC) president Gabriele Gravina told reporters he had asked Gattuso to stay, but insisted it was “not important” after failing to qualify.
“It hurt, because it was necessary for us, for all of Italy and for our movement. It’s a difficult blow to digest. We would have given years of our lives and money to achieve our goal.”
