Barcelona have set a deadline to decide whether to sign Marcus Rashford on a permanent basis. Rashford, 28, has two months left on his loan spell with Barça, having signed from Manchester United last summer.

Europe’s two giants have negotiated a purchase option worth £26 million, but the Camp Nou bosses have yet to make a decision. With 10 goals and 10 assists, the England international has become a useful element in Hansi Flick’s attack.

However, reports suggest that Barcelona are considering alternatives and have approached United about extending his loan. Meanwhile, the Red Devils have no plans to change his contract, with ESPN reporting that the La Liga champions have until June 15 to exercise their buyout option.

He added that if Barça exercised their option, the payment could be made in three installments over the next three years. Rashford’s entourage are said to have been in contact with Barcelona in recent days to confirm the club’s position.

Last month, before being re-elected as Barça president, Joan Laporta told Spain’s Gijantes: “There is a possibility of extending the loan further, but it depends on (sporting director) Deco’s wishes.”

“We have options. We will look at the rest, including part of the buyout option with United. We are looking at contracts.”

However, United have no intention of making any concessions and are only considering a permanent sale. If Barcelona refuse to pay and another buyer is not found, Rashford will return to Old Trafford for pre-season training after this summer’s World Cup.

But he intends to remain at Barça, telling Catalan newspaper Sport in December: “That is the ultimate goal, but that is not the reason why I train hard and give everything. The aim is to win. Barça is a huge, great club built to win titles.”

Rashford will be given more playing time in the coming weeks after Raphinha sustained a hamstring injury during international duty with Brazil. United’s best time on loan was when Raphinha was injured earlier this season, allowing Rashford to play on the left of the front three.

Barça’s next match will be away on Saturday against Atlético Madrid, who will also play in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
