The Englishman will receive a one-match ban for his red card after Maguire was sent off for denying a scoring opportunity. However, if the FA deems it appropriate after receiving this accusation, it is possible that the punishment will be even more severe.
A statement said: “Harry Maguire has been charged after being sent off in the 78th minute of Manchester United FC’s Premier League match against AFC Bournemouth on Friday 20th March. It is alleged that the defender acted inappropriately and used abusive or insulting language or behavior towards the fourth official following his sending off. Harry Maguire has until Thursday 2nd April to respond.”
There is a precedent for this, with Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk receiving an additional one-match ban for abusing a match official during a match against Newcastle in 2023. Van Dijk was suspended for his red card, but was forced to miss another game for his comments to officials.
It remains to be seen whether Maguire will suffer the same fate, but Michael Carrick, who was already upset with the decision, is unlikely to be happy. Carrick cited an incident early in the game in which Amad appeared to be fouled by a Bournemouth player, but the referee did not give him any reprimand.
After the match he said: “He’s definitely got one of them wrong because he’s giving us one penalty for the same thing he didn’t give one penalty. There’s a two-handed grab. The first one he gave to Matthäus and the second one he gave to Amad wasn’t, but I think this one is about the same. In fact, if you have two hands on someone in the box and they go over and control the ball, for me that’s two penalties.”
“It’ll be interesting to see who they admit is wrong, what we got and what we didn’t get, which is wrong. It’s a big moment. They don’t give it, they go down to the other side and score, and all of a sudden, just because they scored, it’s like, ‘Oh, we need a bigger penalty to turn it over,’ when in fact it’s a penalty, and if they’ve already given a penalty, it should be a penalty.”
“It’s really puzzling to understand. And with them scoring, the game flips and changes a little bit. After all that, we defended very well with 10 men. But I have to say one of the penalties was amazing. One of them must have been wrong.”
