Despite being one of Manchester United’s most influential and consistent performers, Bruno Fernandes’ long-term future at Old Trafford rarely felt completely secure. The 31-year-old has been in great form this season, with eight goals and 17 assists in all competitions so far. However, despite his productivity and strong connections with both the club and the fans, rumors of a possible departure persist.
That uncertainty was further compounded during Ruben Amorim’s time at United when reports surfaced that the club were open to a big-money sale to Saudi Arabia, causing temporary tension between the player and the club. But things appear to be stable, at least for now, with the Portugal international back to his best and firmly in the running for the PFA Player of the Year.
Here, we take a look at the bigger picture surrounding Fernandes, including the little-known release clause in his contract at Old Trafford.
Termination clause
Fernandes has made it clear he wants to stay at United, but the club are technically powerless to prevent him from leaving.
That’s because his contract includes a new £56.68 million release clause, which can only be triggered by foreign clubs.
That number may deter some European teams from signing a player who will turn 32 in September and has little resale value, but it won’t be a problem for the Saudis.
If Fernandes stays, United are expected to begin negotiations for a new contract as his existing contract expires in 2027. However, Fernandes has the option to extend his contract for another 12 months.
Offer of £700,000 a week
Last year, it was reported that Saudi Professional League side Al Hilal were willing to make a £100m bid for Fernandes, as well as sign him to a £700,000-a-week contract that would make him the richest player in world sport.
With the midfielder in the latter stages of his career and United carefully balancing their finances, the club were open to approving the sale.

With the midfielder in the latter stages of his career and United carefully balancing their finances, the club were open to approving the sale.
However, this position did not sit well with Fernandes, who was understood to be “hurt” by United’s intention to sever ties with Fernandes.
In the end, the offer was never made formally, and United were allowed to keep their captain, but the sale, which would have been a club record, was also rejected.
United’s stance clear
There had previously been speculation that he would leave the club, but the club’s position has now moved decisively towards Fernandes staying.
While efforts to cut payroll costs continue – with Fernandes drawing in £300,000 a week – United remain determined to maintain their captain’s influence on the field.
That stance was reportedly communicated directly to the player to reduce uncertainty over his future. It is also understood that he is happier since Michael Carrick took over in January.
