Manchester United legend and pundit Roy Keane is mourning the loss of his mother Marie at Marymount University Hospital in Cork, Ireland, after a long illness.
Roy Keane has paid tribute to his mother Marie, who passed away after a long illness. It was confirmed on Friday that Marie had “passed away peacefully” at Marymount University Hospital in Cork “surrounded by her loved ones”.
Manchester United legend Keane was close to Murray. He was due to work on ITV as a commentator for England’s friendly against Uruguay at Wembley on Friday, but was unable to attend due to the sad news.
He is currently sharing a photo of Marie on his Instagram account. The caption simply reads, “You’re always the boss.” This article has a similar theme to my 2022 post, “The Only Boss I Will Listen To.”
Keane received replies from former United teammates Gary Neville and David Beckham, who both posted heart emojis. There was also supportive feedback from legendary runner Sir Mo Farah and fellow former pros Robbie Keane and Anton Ferdinand.

Marie was the mother of five children and will be missed by her loving family, sisters Ina, Annette and Josephine, brothers Jack, Leo, Michael and Noel, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, daughters-in-law Linda, Teresa and Mary, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives, great neighbors and friends.”
Marie lost her husband Mossy at the age of 79 in August 2019, a year after he suffered a stroke.
Visitation will take place on Monday at Cork Funeral Home, followed by Mass on Tuesday at the Church of the Resurrection, followed by burial at St Catherine’s Cemetery, Kilcurry, Co. Cork.
On Friday night, before England’s 1-1 draw with Uruguay, host Mark Pugatch congratulated Keane on ITV.
He said: “Everyone here and at ITV would like to extend our condolences to Roy and his family on the sad passing of his mother Marie. All our thoughts are with the Keene family tonight.”
Keane’s student club Rockmount AFC in Cork was among the first to offer their condolences. They said: “Our deepest sympathies go out to the Keene and Lynch families on the passing of Marie.”
