Michael Carrick has won seven of 10 games since being appointed caretaker manager of Manchester United and David Beckham has given his opinion on the job at Old Trafford.
David Beckham has praised Michael Carrick for bringing a calming presence to Manchester United, something he believes has been missing for a decade. Carrick has won seven of 10 games since taking over as caretaker manager in January and has put together a strong case to become permanent manager this summer.
Ruben Amorim was sacked in early 2026, leaving United in turmoil as they languished in sixth place in the Premier League. Carrick have only lost once so far and lifted their team into third place with 23 points from a potential 30 points in the league as they aim to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
The former midfielder has made an impressive impression on the players and his influence is so great that director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada are yet to hold talks with anyone for the full-time role. Carrick’s chances of getting the job grow stronger with each result, with Beckham becoming the latest prominent former player to sing his praises.
“Well, to be honest, I have to admit that the last few months have been much more comfortable than the last 10 years. It’s been tough during that time,” Beckham said on TalkSPORT when asked if he was surprised by Carrick’s performance.

“But I think Michael has the experience. I think he has the composure that we brought him to the club. He knows the club, he knows the players, he knows how Man United play, he knows how Man United play.”
“And I’ve always liked Michael as a coach. When you watch him, there’s a calmness. There’s a grace on that side of the pitch as well. I don’t want to say elegant because I don’t know if that’s the right thing to do, but there’s a grace in the way he’s the way he is, whether it’s the way he celebrates or the way he gets angry.
“You know, all of those things are important to a manager. And I think the way he brought the team together and brought the team together was incredible. And as a United fan, I think that’s exactly what we needed.”

Carrick continues to dismiss any doubts about taking up the full-time job and is focused on his remaining seven Premier League games. United have a six-point buffer over fifth-placed Liverpool and, with no other competitions to worry about, are strong favorites to finish in the top four.
United bosses appointed Carrick on a contract until the end of the season, with the intention of waiting for Amorim’s long-term successor to be identified. The club have been linked with Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola, Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner, former Marseille player Roberto de Zerbi and former England manager Gareth Southgate, but Carrick is undoubtedly the frontrunner.
