The Manchester United midfielder looked set to receive his playing orders against England, but his international friendly appearance for Uruguay has been suspended.
Uruguay international and Manchester United star Manuel Ugarte received two yellow cards against England on Friday night, but in unusual circumstances avoided a red card. After some confusion, it emerged that the midfielder had seen his second caution rescinded by the referee and was allowed to remain on the pitch as a result.
The commentary team of Sam Matterface and Lee Dixon were perplexed when Ugarte did not leave the field despite being shown an apparent second yellow card. Initially, it was suggested that this warning “didn’t exist.”
A few minutes later, the matter became somewhat clearer when it was explained that the second yellow card had been revoked. Matterface said, “According to a fourth source, it appears that the second yellow has been cancelled.
“I don’t think you can do that, but still… maybe the laws of the game changed a little early on.”
“We may just have overlooked a small mistake,” he added.

After the match, when it appeared that Ugarte had been given the first yellow, it was suggested that Jose Jimenez had actually been booked.
The International Football Association Board has adjusted the powers of video assistant referees and introduced new powers ahead of the World Cup. Under new review powers, VAR will be able to examine red cards resulting from a clearly erroneous second yellow card.
Players may also consider: In case of mistaken identity, the referee penalizes the wrong team for the offense, resulting in the wrong player being shown a red or yellow card. Competitions may allow VAR to review corner kicks that are clearly awarded in error, provided the review can be completed immediately without delaying the restart.
Ugarte did not last long on the pitch after receiving a yellow card and was replaced by Marcelo Bielsa shortly after.
England could only manage a draw with Uruguay after Ben White went through a rollercoaster situation on the pitch. The Arsenal defender was booed on the field when he was introduced in the second period, but quickly gave England the lead.
The full-back arrived at the back post and fired home from close range to mark an impressive return under manager Thomas Tuchel. Unfortunately, the defender conceded a penalty and allowed Federico Valverde to equalize in the 94th minute.
Harry Maguire thought this was a tough decision. “It’s soft,” he said.
“He kicked the ball over the bar. Ben just tried to block the shot. It’s not a bad tackle, it’s not malicious. It’s part of defending in the box and contact will happen.”
