England manager Thomas Tuchel was furious with referee Sven Jablonski after Phil Foden was tackled violently by Uruguay’s Ronald Araujo. Despite the challenge occurring right in front of the fourth official, the defender escaped any punishment.
Foden required on-pitch treatment before returning. However, he only lasted around five more minutes before being replaced by Cole Palmer.
After leaving the pitch, the Manchester City star went straight down the tunnel for treatment. He then returned to the bench to watch his teammates in action.
Tuchel appeared frustrated at the incident and appeared to take his anger out on fourth official Benjamin Brand. England’s head coach initially protested the challenge, but seemed perplexed by the lack of a card.
Araujo wasn’t even picked by Jablonski, even though replays showed he caught Foden with force. Manchester United’s Manuel Ugarte was booked for a foul on Palmer, and it took until the 70th minute for the referee to take out his card.
After the Foden incident, there were a number of issues that infuriated coach Tuchel. The German players appeared to be protesting the way the players were challenged and the fact that coach Jablonski let them go unpunished.
Ben White’s goal finally saw the Three Lions break through at Wembley. The Arsenal defender marked his return to the national team by hitting the back post from a corner kick.
White received mixed reactions when he came on as a substitute for Fikayo Tomori. Ahead of this week’s call-up, White had been omitted from the England squad following reports of a falling out with Steve Holland.
