Jurgen Klopp signs Mohamed Salah to Liverpool, the Egyptian has scored over 250 goals, but the German has named one man who could surpass that figure.
Manager Jurgen Klopp has suggested that Hugo Ekitike could surpass Mohamed Salah’s Liverpool goalscoring record if he continues to stick around for the next 10 years.
The Egyptian announced this week that he will leave Anfield in the summer, choosing to terminate the remaining year of his contract by mutual consent. Despite being in the middle of Liverpool’s worst season ever, he has been showered with praise for what he has achieved.
Salah set the then-current Premier League season goalscoring record in his debut year and went on to be prolific, winning the Golden Boot award four times and being named PFA Player of the Year three times.
Salah became Liverpool’s third-highest scorer, ahead of Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen. His total of 255 points means he is behind Roger Hunt (285) and Ian Rush (346), but Klopp suggested this year’s top scorer Ekitike may have a chance of overtaking him eventually.
The Frenchman made an immediate impact after joining from Frankfurt, scoring 17 goals so far. To surpass Salah, he would need to score 25 goals a year for the next 10 years, but Klopp admitted that would be difficult.

“I hope he (Salah) has a successful rest of the season. I actually emailed him last night and I really hope he enjoys the rest of the season, but I know Mo only enjoys it when he wins football matches and scores goals. Where he’s come from, what he’s been through and what he’s given us… it’s unbelievable,” he told Anfield Wrap.
“At the moment, when you work with him, the more you look at the bigger picture, it’s ridiculous, absolutely ridiculous, unparalleled numbers. In 10 years we could be sitting here, maybe Ekitike (beating his record), but it will be difficult. One of the greatest players of all time will definitely leave the club in the summer, and we’ll see where he pops up next.”
Klopp also touched on his previous claims that he wanted to sign Julian Brandt from Borussia Dortmund instead of Salah in the summer of 2017. The Reds ended up signing the Egyptian player from Roma for £34m.
“Here’s the situation. When you’re looking for a winger, you talk to seven or eight people. Yes, we talked to Julian Brandt, we talked to Mo Salah. It’s not that he (Brandt) doesn’t want it, so we took him (Salah). I don’t care what people think, but at that moment we were 100 per cent sure he was the player.”
