Bristol City have appointed Roy Hodgson as head coach for the remainder of the season in a surprise move after the Championship club opted to sack Gerhard Struber. The 78-year-old former England and Liverpool manager will take up his first position since leaving Crystal Palace in February 2024 and will manage the club’s final seven games of the season.
Struber will be stepping away from that role after the Robins won just three of their last 13 league games as they fell out of the playoff picture. However, the Austrian was hampered by the departure of key players during the January transfer window, including club captain Zach Viner and forward Anis Mehmeti.
“We would like to thank Gerhard and Bernd for their hard work over the past nine months and wish them the best,” Bristol City chief executive Charlie Boss said in a statement.
“Roy’s appointment means more than just the results of the next seven games.
“For the remainder of the season, he will help set the standards and values at the club that we need to succeed in the future.
“Roy is a very experienced coach who has achieved and won at the highest level.
“He will help me, the players and the football staff grow towards realizing our potential.
“We are in the process of appointing an athletic director who will be directly involved in hiring a new permanent head coach.”
Hodgson, who was the club’s manager in 1982, said: “I’ve had some great conversations with the board and I’m really excited about the opportunity to help out until the end of the season.”
“We will get to work right away and try to put in a good performance on Good Friday.”
The club announced on Monday that Hodgson would be introduced to players and staff for the first time.
They will then begin preparations for next week’s Championship game against Charlton Athletic.
