Mo Salah will leave Liverpool after nine years at the end of this season, but his explosive comments have sparked a debate over his place among the best players in Premier League history.
Jamie Carragher has claimed that Mo Salah will be ranked ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo on the list of Premier League greats. Salah, 33, confirmed in a bombshell announcement on Monday that he will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.
The Egyptian captain spent nine years with the Reds, winning every major trophy, including the Champions League and two Premier League titles. Salah has struggled for form this season and his off-field behavior has been criticized by the likes of Carragher, but he will be remembered as a club legend at Anfield and a great player in the Premier League.
After struggling at Chelsea early in his career, Salah truly made his presence felt in English football in his first season at Liverpool by breaking former Manchester United star Ronaldo’s record of 31 league goals. That’s part of the reason why Carragher thinks the Liverpool icon should be ranked higher than Ronaldo and only next to a certain Thierry Henry.

“In the pantheon of overseas attacking players who played for England, only Thierry Henry surpasses Salah’s performance and consistency,” Carragher wrote in a column for the Telegraph.
“Many will argue the merits of players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Eden Hazard, Gianfranco Zola, Dennis Bergkamp and Eric Cantona, but no player has produced the same incredible numbers season after season as the Egyptian.

“Ronaldo’s time at Manchester United, both first and after his return, was during one of his absolute Real Madrid peaks. If we strictly judge his performances and influence in the Premier League, Salah is ahead of him. Salah is an automatic front three alongside Henry and Ronaldo in the best XI in the history of the Premier League.”
Despite their shared status as Liverpool legends, Carragher and Salah have clashed over the years, often via social media. In December, Carragher labeled Salah’s explosive interview after he was left on the bench as “disgraceful” and accused the forward of trying to have Reds manager Arn Slott sacked.
But Carragher praised the 33-year-old as he prepares to bid farewell to Anfield in May as Liverpool’s final game is at home to Brentford. “Nothing impresses me more in a game than a world-class footballer who never wants to miss a game,” he added.
“In Salah’s case, if he was substituted and had to miss even a minute of action, he would become visibly unhappy. Such displays of displeasure were often frowned upon by others.”
“But give me a star who can’t bear to sit on the bench or in the stands and crumple a little over players who can’t get off the field fast enough. That hunger and resilience are the hallmarks of true greatness.”
