Mohamed Salah announced on social media this week that he will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.
Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville have clashed over the circumstances surrounding Mohamed Salah’s departure from Liverpool. The forward released a statement on social media on Tuesday, announcing that he will be leaving the club this summer.
The news prompted a number of reactions from experts, with Mr Carragher and Mr Neville also weighing in. However, when discussing the circumstances, it appears that there was a difference of opinion between the two.
Salah’s departure comes after he put pen to paper on a new two-year contract at Anfield a year ago. That second year has now ended and the Egyptian player can leave for free at the end of the season.

The decision to leave the club a year earlier than planned has been the subject of debate. Mr Carragher said on the overlap: “Why are you saying you’re shocked, that you’re breaking your mutual contract? This is a great deal for everyone and it works for everyone.”
Neville responded: “I understand that. I’m not saying it wouldn’t be sweet for anyone to think that Liverpool could spend money on another player next season and Mo Salah could change his career. I just would have expected Mo Salah to want a two-year deal and I would have probably expected him to say, ‘No, I’m going to hang in there.'”

“My point is, he must have thought it was really bad. I’m not saying he shouldn’t have done it. I’m sure he must have really hit rock bottom and thought, ‘I need to get out of here.’ By the way, this is a place he loves.”
An even more furious Carragher replied: “You can’t get out of here saying, ‘Liverpool, I have to get out of here, it’s not the same for me, it’s not my team’. Stop talking about Liverpool. It’s a big problem for Liverpool and it’s about Salah.”
Neville said: “I’m not saying he’s wrong. What I’m saying is that he’s desperate to stay at Liverpool, he wants a two-year contract, he loves the city and the club as much as he loves the fans, and he gets to the point where he thinks, ‘I’ve got to get out of here and leave this club now’. That’s a big change.”
Carragher replied: “Because he’s not playing! Are they the same players? The team is built around him, so will he play less next season? Of course he is. It’s obvious and it’s not that difficult.”
“Mo Salah, it’s not just about his money. He’s like, ‘I want to play every minute, every week.’ You see how the team is formed. Next season, Liverpool need different players in the wide areas. That’s what Liverpool need to sign.”
Salah’s departure marks the end of his nine-year spell at Anfield. During that time, he played in 435 games, scored 255 goals and provided a further 122 assists. The 33-year-old will aim to further increase that number between now and the end of this season.
There are seven games left in the Premier League. Liverpool are also in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup and Champions League.
