Manchester United are considering investing again in the summer, prioritizing midfield as Rio Ferdinand cites the need for four new transfers at Old Trafford.
Manager Rio Ferdinand has asked Manchester United to sign four new players in the summer transfer window, two of which are midfielders.
Strengthening options in the middle of the pitch is now seen as a priority at Old Trafford. Ruben Amorim had hoped to strengthen that area but ultimately missed out after spending £200m on the front line, leaving money at a premium.
Ferdinand insists there is no need to consider all of United’s summer recruits as first-team regulars and that the addition of youngsters who can be observed and learned for the future is also a plus. The club have confirmed that Casemiro will leave the club after his contract expires, but Manuel Ugarte could also leave.
The former United defender also urged the club, who are aiming to return to the Champions League, to bring in another striker who can act as a substitute. A full-back is also on the shortlist.
Ferdinand said on his podcast: “If United could bring in four players in the next window and two of them are starters, I think that’s a realistic transfer window. If I were the club, my priority would be two central midfielders, one a starter, and maybe Bruno[Fernandes]young players who can bleed here and there around Koby[Mainou]and the players you bring in.”

“I’m going to get another forward, a young player to back up the players we already have, and I’m going to get a full-back. That’s it. I understand you want 10 new players, most positions can be improved, but I don’t think we need a major reshuffle. There’s still a lot, but that’s the reality.”
United signed Benjamin Sesco for more than £70m in the summer and have continued to do well after a slow start. They have so far failed to add to their young strikers, and Rasmus Hojlund is an example of an investment gone wrong.
Ferdinand recently said of his potential targets: “Everyone was talking about[Carlos]Baleva at the beginning of the season, but he seems to have lost a little bit of form. Elliott Anderson seems to have jumped to the front of the queue. I think he’s a great player.”
“I think Elliott Anderson is the right type of person, not only as a player, but also as a personality. I think he will be a good addition to the team. Tonali is a big talent that everyone is talking about and Guimarães is also a big talent that everyone is talking about.”
“But I think the type of midfielder United need is someone who is a bit more all-action, able to cover the ground, dynamic, strong, strong and able to lead the team. So far Anderson seems to have ticked those boxes. But I think there are some young guns I won’t name yet because I don’t want anyone else to smell that.”
