Chelsea will not sack Liam Rosenior even if they fail to qualify for the Champions League, with Stamford Bridge bosses determined to give him time to prove himself.
Chelsea have no plans to sack Liam Rosenior this summer – even if they miss out on Champions League qualification at the end of the season.
Rosenior was hired in January to replace Enzo Maresca, who joined the company on New Year’s Day. He took charge of a team that was ranked 8th. His mission was to keep the Blues in the Champions League, which realistically meant they needed to finish at least fifth.
The team currently sit in 6th place, with Liverpool in 5th place, one point behind. Aston Villa are fourth and Manchester United are third. Rosenior will be allowed to keep his job for the time being, but the only scenario in which things would change is if Chelsea collapse in the final week of the season.
Chelsea’s top brass did not expect anything like that to happen and believe they will not be able to make a proper decision until the former Strasbourg manager has been able to work for a period of 70 games (he has now been in charge for 17 games). As a result, the Telegraph reported that the club has no plans to formally review Rosenior’s performance until the summer of 2027.
Chelsea are confident that their new manager will be open to feedback and constructive criticism. They are confident he will be able to quickly learn from his mistakes at the club, where he has already become the fifth permanent manager from 2022 under the current owners.

Rosenior recently defended his record by claiming: “Ever since we were in the group, we were third in the league. Sometimes it feels like we’re not. The last league game we played, we won 4-1 at Aston Villa.”
Since that victory declaration, the Blues have endured several setbacks and real-life challenges. They faced PSG in their last 16 Champions League games, losing 8-2 on aggregate. At the weekend, some of Rosenior’s decisions came under the spotlight as they lost 3-0 to Everton, costing them the chance to move up to fifth place.
He’s already flip-flopped with goalkeepers. Roberto Sanchez has not completely convinced himself since joining the club and was dropped from his number one spot for the match in Paris. Sanchez was reinstated after his substitute, Filip Jorgensen, made a mistake that led to a goal.
The former Brighton shot-stopper then made a blunder that allowed Everton to score at the weekend. Rosenior has been accused of creating uncertainty in a position that was already up for grabs. Chelsea believe this summer will be crucial for their recruitment and, while they may still sign a new goalkeeper, Mike Penders is likely to return from his loan to Strasbourg to compete for the number one spot.
