The Arsenal defender was reinstated into the national team by manager Thomas Tuchel after not being selected under Gareth Southgate.
Whatever your views on his acrimonious departure from England’s squad at the last World Cup and his subsequent failure to take part in international selection, there are questions that must be asked about Ben White’s recall to the squad. Is it worth it?
Some believe that voluntary exile means the end of international prospects. You know the idea. You decide when your country needs you. You don’t decide when your country needs you.
It’s a very old school concept. It’s an idea as old as the idea that elite soccer nations don’t need to go to rival elite soccer nations to find managers. Hey, look.
It is little wonder, then, that Thomas Tuchel is not at all concerned about White’s decision to oppose the selection of Gareth Southgate late in the former England manager’s tenure. Everyone knows the story, but it seems to have been a waste, and Mr Southgate denies it.

White had a falling out with his assistant Steve Holland during the 2022 Qatar tournament and decided he would not be able to play for England until he returned home and the coaching staff was replaced. There may be subtleties and differences in interpretation, but the gist is as follows.
And White’s stance doesn’t appear to be bad enough to prevent other managers from selecting him. But it becomes a sideshow.
If he plays Uruguay at Wembley on Friday, or Japan the following Tuesday, or both, there will be some in the crowd complaining. In the lead-up to the match, players who have made themselves available for every match are asked for their thoughts on the matter.
And that will be one of the first questions Tuchel is asked when he speaks on the eve of the match against Uruguay. Tuchel shouldn’t be worried in the slightest.
Why is he interested in discussions about patriotism? He’s here not as a patriot, but as a professional.
But the most pertinent question concerns White’s selection over Trent Alexander-Arnold. Not only was White selected ahead of Alexander-Arnold, but so were Tino Livramento and Jed Spence (not to mention the injured Jarrell Quansah).
There was speculation that Alexander-Arnold had been left out of Real’s starting line-up for the Madrid derby, but he came on to assist Vinicius Junior’s winner. But on the other hand, White underperformed under Tuchel in Arsenal’s Carabao Cup defeat to Manchester City, Libramento made an unforgettable cameo for Newcastle United at home to Sunderland and Spence was hooked at half-time of Tottenham Hotspur’s capitulation to Nottingham Forest.
White is a decent player, but the bottom line is that if Tuchel considers him an important part of his World Cup squad, that’s a worrying sign.
Hopefully Reece James will be fit and, even if he doesn’t have anything against Alexander-Arnold, Tuchel will have two very complete and adventurous right-backs at his disposal. Alexander-Arnold is a right-back in the Champions League for Real Madrid.
White will probably explain everything during his shift in the next week or so. But whether what he brings to the England table is worth the sideshow is highly debatable.
