Victor Goqueres and his teammates missed the chance to end Arsenal’s six-year trophy drought after losing to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley
Victor Gokeres has claimed Arsenal will be even more “motivated” to win trophies after their Carabao Cup disappointment. The Gunners could still be on track for an impressive treble, as they are nine points clear in the title race and in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup and Champions League.
However, they suffered a huge blow when they lost in the final to their main rivals, Manchester City, who had been prominent in the title race in two of the past three seasons. But Gokeres says Arsenal need to come back even stronger after the international break if they are to stay on track to win the Premier League for the first time in 22 years.
“Of course I don’t feel great right now, but it’s not like we have a game in three days. We have a few weeks or so until the next game, but we’ll definitely go again and be even more motivated for the game,” Gokeres said.
Arsenal were without key players in the final, with Julian Timber and Eberechi Eze absent due to injury. Gunners captain Martin Odegaard is hoping to return after the international break and is optimistic Timber will not face a lengthy layoff.

However, Eze is a major concern with a thigh injury and is expected to miss England’s friendly against Uruguay and Japan. But Gokeres insists he believes whoever comes in can step up and do a good job.
“The players who replaced those two did a good job. I think we have a great squad and of course it helps if everyone is fit and yes, that’s what we want. At Wembley they weren’t available and yes, that’s the way it is.”
Swedish star Gökeres admitted Arsenal’s narrow loss in the final and Manchester City’s momentum at the start of the second half were to blame. Arsenal had the best chances early on, but failed to create much since the break and have now gone without a trophy for six years.

Gokeres added: “We created some chances at the start of the game and I think maybe 10 minutes into the second half they got the momentum. I think they had the ball. Maybe they didn’t create as many dangerous chances, but they had the ball for a long time and it looked like the same in the second half.”
“It was a close game. That’s what usually happens with two top teams. The moment of the game when they scored, yeah, it was difficult to get going after that, but yeah, that’s how it is.”
