Big controversy: Tottenham lose 3-0 to Nottingham Forest in what would have been six relegation points, leaving Spurs in 17th place, just one point above West Ham
Isn’t it a waste to go down? Tottenham appear to be putting that theory to the test.
Spurs are in rapid decline and Sunday’s 3-0 home defeat to fellow strugglers Nottingham Forest worsened their crisis. Beleaguered manager Igor Tudor has not won a single game in six Premier League games since replacing the sacked manager Thomas Frank in February when talk of relegation seemed exaggerated.
Tottenham are currently in 17th place, one point above the relegation zone. Fortunately for Spurs, West Ham also lost on Sunday. With seven games remaining, fans and pundits are pondering Tottenham’s status in the top flight.
In this week’s Big Debate, we asked Mirror Football writers whether they thought Spurs would collapse.

No, my argument is not based on logic, format, upcoming games, or statistics. I just can’t see it. It’s that simple. And perhaps that is why Tottenham are relegated: they are effectively sleepwalking down the road to relegation.
The appointment of Igor Tudor was a huge failure. It is clear that he is in a difficult situation after news of his bereavement broke after Tottenham’s defeat to Nottingham Forest. So some sensitivity is required here.
But it’s hard to argue why Spurs don’t make changes at this point. They have played away games at Sunderland, Wolves, Aston Villa and Chelsea. Their home games will be against Brighton, Leeds and Everton. It looks quite creepy.
They have yet to win the Premier League in 2026. They have not won a league match since December 28th against Crystal Palace. They’re in surprisingly bad shape.
So why do you think they will leave? It seems impossible to imagine them playing in their own stadium in the championship. Their players are (to be honest) too good. And at some point they will flip the switch.
There’s no logic to it. But I can’t believe they will fall apart. The team I fear is Leeds, who dried up at the wrong time. I don’t want to see Leeds bring something to the party and leave. Apart from West Ham, Leeds are the most at risk.

The battle to avoid a third relegation spot alongside hopeless Wolves and Burnley will be a close one, with Spurs currently seen as the team most likely to lose the scrap. The main reason is that they are not technically or mentally looking for scraps.
The final four of the remaining seven games will be against Aston Villa (A), Leeds (H), Chelsea (A) and Everton (H). All four are highly motivated. Spurs’ chances of survival could very well depend on their next three games, with a home match against Brighton sandwiched with trips to Sunderland and Wolves.
These are winnable games, but Spurs are showing no signs of finding any form in the Premier League. The only consolation from Sunday was that West Ham were surprisingly dry at Villa Park, but Nuno Espirito Santo’s side still look like they have a little more strength left in them.
Despite Tottenham’s win, Leeds remain in danger, as do Nottingham Forest. However, I expect the final relegation spot to be either Spurs or West Ham, although there is little evidence that the former can stop the bleeding. If I were a gambling fan, I’d bet on Championship football being with the Spurs next season.

I was shocked but not surprised. That was my reaction to Sunday’s result in North London and Tottenham should thank their few lucky stars left with West Ham getting away with nothing at Villa Park. But while I still can’t imagine either Spurs or West Ham fading, Vitor Pereira’s appointment at Forest is clearly working.
Which brings me to Leeds. Unlike Nuno and Pereira, Daniel Farke has no experience of Premier League relegation battles, or at least close ones. Leeds have failed to score in each of their last four top-flight games, with their last win coming in the first week of February. That’s one of the reasons I think they’ll join Burnley and Wolves in the second tier.

There is no getting around this. The Spurs have been absolutely awful this season. Everything about Sunday’s defeat to Nottingham Forest suggests they will spend next season in the Championship.
They were weak defensively. There was a lack of commitment. And the North London side had no teeth in attack. It’s unacceptable for something like that to happen against a relegation rival. But my gut says they’ll keep happening.
It all boils down to the old adage of whether the Spurs are “too good to lose,” and in their case, they really are. They have a lot of international football players in their team, but they should do better by all accounts.
It’s got to work out at some point, and I believe it will in the next few weeks when we play teams whose seasons are already over. They will almost get enough points here to retain their Premier League status. But it will be close.

It would be foolhardy to remove the team’s name from the Premier League table right now, look at their current form and future matches, and rule out the possibility of Tottenham being relegated. They are in free fall.
Sunday was their biggest game of the season. And they didn’t show up. Nottingham Forest’s three-goal defense was absolutely embarrassing and showed a lack of organisation, motivation and fight.
Cristian Romero sums up their plight. Obviously a talented player. He is the person who should lead the team’s counterattack. But someone who is completely responsible, undisciplined, and avoids responsibility.
Spurs are a ship without a rudder. An encouraging second-half performance at Anfield and the win against Atletico Madrid seemed like a false dawn against Forest, which showed everything Igor Tudor’s side were missing.
In this situation, traditional wisdom must be ignored. Spurs are clearly the worst team in the league right now and could absolutely be relegated.
