Chelsea legend John Terry sparks controversy after appearing to support calls for a burqa ban in the UK in an Instagram post
Former Chelsea captain John Terry has come under fire after apparently supporting proposals to ban the burqa in the UK. The former defender appears to have shared his position in an Instagram post by former reformist MP Rupert Lowe, who founded his own political movement, Restore Britain.
Mr Lowe, a former Southampton chairman, posted a photo of a Muslim woman wearing a burqa outside a London Underground station, displaying Bengali script. He wrote below the post: “This photo was taken in London.
“Restore Britain will ban the burqa and Restore Britain will ensure that all London stations use English and English only. Enough is enough. Vote for Restore Britain to take back our capital.”
Terry made his stance known in the comments section by posting three clapping emojis accompanied by the England flag. This caused controversy and the former England captain came under fire, but Mr Lowe was quick to defend him in a subsequent post.
“England/Chelsea legend John Terry appears to have come under fire for praising Restore Britain’s policy of banning the burqa and requiring English and English only at all London stations,” he wrote.

“This is the position that the majority of the British people support. We have a party that says exactly what the people think and will fight to make it happen. Take back Britain.”
“Who cares if we get called names? It doesn’t matter. We don’t care and neither should you. This isn’t 2015 anymore. These insults mean nothing.”
“We need more people to show courage and stand up for the ideas of the majority. Restore Britain is doing just that. We are going to take our country back.”
Mr Lowe, who represents Great Yarmouth in the House of Commons, had left the Reform Party before being suspended for allegedly threatening colleagues and bullying at work. He later quit the party. The former private school pupil denied the allegations and claimed he was the target of a witch hunt after expressing criticism of leader Nigel Farage.
Terry previously slammed the British government for its handling of former Chelsea owner and Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich. The billionaire faced sanctions from Boris Johnson’s Conservative Party after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and had his UK assets frozen before transferring Chelsea to a consortium led by American businessman Todd Boley.
Speaking on the Obi Wan podcast last year, Terry said: “I think what happened to him is disgusting, I really do. I think the British government should be ashamed of their actions towards him.”
“What he did during lockdown and what he did for the NHS was sensational. He opened up Stamford Bridge to all nurses and gave people a home during those difficult times.
“He’s just a lovely, lovely guy who loves our football club and thankfully he made the right decision to leave another football club behind and come here.”
