Chelsea legend John Terry is facing a backlash after appearing to support calls to ban the burqa in the UK. The former defender apparently shared his views in an Instagram post by former Reform MP Rupert Lowe, who has since launched his own party, Restore Britain. Mr Rowe, who was previously Southampton chairman, shared an image of a Muslim woman wearing a burqa in front of a London Underground station with signs in Bengali.
He captioned the post: “This photo was taken in London. Restore Britain will ban the burqa and Restore Britain will ensure that all London stations speak only English. Enough is enough. Vote for Restore Britain to take back our capital.” Terry made his opinion clear in the comments, posting three clapping emojis next to the England flag.
This was controversial and the former England captain faced a backlash, but Lowe was soon taken up defending at another post.
“England/Chelsea legend John Terry appears to have come under fire for praising Restore Britain’s policy of banning the burqa and ensuring English only at all London stations,” Lowe wrote.
“This is a position supported by the vast majority of the British people. We now have a party that says exactly what people think and will fight to deliver it. Take back Britain.”
“Who cares if we get called names? It doesn’t matter. We don’t care and neither should you. This isn’t 2015 anymore. These insults mean nothing.”
“We need more people to show courage and stand up for the ideas of the majority. Restore Britain is doing just that. We are going to take our country back.”
Mr Lowe, who represents Great Yarmouth in the House of Commons, previously left the Reformatory before being suspended over allegations of threatening behavior towards colleagues and workplace bullying. He then left the party.

The former schoolboy denied these claims and claimed he was the victim of a witch hunt after criticizing reform leader Nigel Farage.
Meanwhile, Terry previously hit out at the British government over the treatment of former Chelsea owner and Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich.
The billionaire sold Chelsea to a consortium led by American businessman Todd Boley after his British assets were frozen and sanctions imposed by Boris Johnson’s Conservative Party following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Appearing on the Obi Wan podcast last year, Terry said: “I think what happened to him is disgusting, I really do. I think the British government should be ashamed of their actions towards him.”
“What he did during lockdown and what he did for the NHS was sensational. He opened up Stamford Bridge to all nurses and gave people a home during those difficult times.
“He’s just a lovely, lovely guy who loves our football club and thankfully he made the right decision to leave another football club behind and come here.”
