There were scenes of violence outside St James’ Park ahead of Sunday’s Tyne Wear derby between Newcastle and Sunderland.

The Black Cats had already won a game at the Stadium of the Light, visiting the home of their fiercest rivals for the first time in 10 years, with a famous 2-1 victory.

Newcastle took the lead with a goal from Anthony Gordon and then gained bragging rights with goals from Kemsudine Talbi and Brian Brobbey to outscore their rivals.

However, there were some unpleasant scenes where supporters clashed with each other before kick-off. There was a heavy police presence outside the stadium, but reports emerged that some supporters were involved in skirmishes just before the midday kick-off.

Witnesses claimed that a small number of Sunderland fans who were traveling broke away from the police escort and entered the stadium, joining a large group of home fans. This sparked a violent confrontation and the Daily Mail claimed one person was given CPR before being taken away.

There were similarly disturbing moments shortly after the game started, when the match was briefly suspended due to allegations of discriminatory abuse against Sunderland’s Lutsharel Gertruida.

Northumbria Police have revealed details of their police operation ahead of this weekend’s match, including advice for Sunderland fans attending the match.

A statement read: “In order to ensure everyone’s safety, we can confirm that a police-supported convoy for Sunderland supporters to St James’s Park will depart from Newcastle Central Station at 10.15am.

“This mirrors the escort seen in the comeback win at Sunderland last December and is expected to be used by the majority of away fans.

“Later arrivals will have to wait at the station until officers can provide a second escort, but given the travel time required and the necessary security and ticketing checks, there is unfortunately a risk that they will not be able to make it in time for the 12pm kick-off.

“Sunderland fans should therefore do their best to arrive at Central Station before the 10.15am start time. Once at the station, Sunderland supporters will be directed by officials and partners to the start location where they can gather before departure.”

Superintendent Hall added: “The overwhelming majority of supporters of both clubs will follow the advice shared by us and our partners and will go to the match to enjoy this opportunity.”

Police promised to take firm action against supporters who try to cause trouble.

“However, we want to be clear that we have zero tolerance for anyone who attempts to use gaming as an excuse to cause problems.

“Those found responsible will then face strong action, including criminal prosecution and a football banning order, with clubs potentially taking further action.”

“In addition to increasing our police presence on-site, we will also have additional officers in the center of both cities. Ultimately, we want to ensure that all our supporters have a safe and enjoyable time, and we want everyone to play their part in achieving that outcome.”
