Both Liverpool and Mohamed Salah have endured difficult seasons, but Reds great Graeme Souness has given a particularly scathing insight into the Egyptian’s form and future at Anfield.
Liverpool icon Graeme Souness believes Mo Salah should end his Anfield career this summer after blaming Egyptians for the Reds’ downturn. The reigning Premier League champions have endured a tough season under manager Arne Slott, dropping to fifth place.
They can still finish the season with a top-four spot and two silver medals in the FA Cup and Champions League, but defending their title has become very difficult.
Salah has also had a difficult season in front of goal, scoring just five goals in the Premier League. Reds hero Souness told Mail Online while explaining his form:
“Once you reach that age range of 33-34, you either fall off a cliff or you slowly decline. I think Salah is the former.”
“When I went to the first game of the season, the Community Shield against Crystal Palace, I was sitting next to my young son and I said: ‘You don’t know what’s wrong with him?’ And I thought maybe he needed six games to get up to speed.

“But he’s never improved. His numbers speak for themselves. His numbers are way down and he’s the single biggest reason why Liverpool have had such an indifferent season, because some in that group of players are probably feeling the pain, some are feeling the negativity around them and they’re not responding well to it.
“And when you’re in that position you need the big players to stand up and be counted. And I think it was a bit of a shock to the Liverpool supporters, the manager and the coaching staff that they didn’t do that.”
Souness continued his criticism of Salah, claiming that he was the main reason for the Reds’ difficult season. And when asked if the forward should leave this summer, he simply replied: “Yes.”
Souness added: “Right now his best is behind him, there’s no doubt about that. You’re the first to know that and it happens to everyone. You don’t see the same spark. If you’re looking for the single biggest reason[for Liverpool’s erratic form]it’s because he’s not putting up the numbers.”
“He’s been Liverpool’s go-to guy for the last six or seven years. When things don’t go his way, he completely changes the game and he’s scored a ridiculous number of goals every season. He’s great – Liverpool’s greatness – but his best seasons are behind him.”
Salah is under contract with Liverpool until 2027 and only signed a new contract with the club in April last year.
