Michael Carrick has impressed since being appointed Manchester United manager, but Red Devils icon Roy Keane remains unconvinced about a full spell at Old Trafford
Nicky Butt has criticized Roy Keane for suggesting Michael Carrick should not be appointed permanently as Manchester United manager. The former midfielder was appointed as Ruben Amorim’s replacement earlier this season and made a positive impression.
Carrick led United to the brink of Champions League qualification with seven wins from nine games. This form was enough to prompt some calls for him to take over the job permanently.
Mr Keane shares his views and although he is not among those calling for Mr Carrick to remain, Mr Butt has also hit back. The former United midfielder told Paddy Power: “Roy is very stubborn about what he thinks and what he says and that’s what makes him who he is.”
“He really believes there are better people out there and Michael doesn’t have the experience so I understand what he means. Michael is a phenomenal guy and has done very well, but does that make him the best candidate for the permanent job? I don’t know, and no one will know until he goes through a couple of transfer windows.”

“Right now, he’s just coaching the players and getting the team on the field. It’s a different story when you get involved in recruiting and get bad press and then you have to cut players or take players out. So I understand Roy’s reasoning that he might not be the right candidate, but if there’s someone else, I don’t know who it is.
“(Carlo) Ancelotti is not going to embark on a five-year rebuild at Man United. He has done everything he has to do in the game, but is he going to return to normalcy in a team that needs to rebuild? Michael will be keen on that given his age, drive and love for the club. He could reach the level that Roy is talking about. He hasn’t achieved it yet, but that’s normal.”
“His results so far have been phenomenal. The club will give him the job and he will have to prove people wrong. Roy is one of them.”
Butt also gave his opinion on the managerial position at Old Trafford, saying the club’s leaders need to think carefully about their next move. He added: “They won’t buy[Diego]Simeone because he has more money than anyone at Atletico Madrid.”
“[England manager Thomas]Tuchel has signed a new contract so we may not have him for 18 months, otherwise we will have to pay a lot of money. Probably the only player is[PSG manager]Luis Enrique.”
“I’m glad I’m not the one choosing the next manager. Jason[Wilcox]and Omar[Berada]have to get this right. They made some mistakes. They were wrong in giving Erik ten Hag a new contract, they were wrong in sacking Ruben Amorim. They can’t make another mistake.”
