Manchester United are reportedly targeting two transfer coups this summer. The Red Devils are currently enjoying their most successful period in recent years under interim manager Michael Carrick. Since being appointed to lead the team until the end of the season, Carrick has led the team to seven wins, one draw and one loss in the Premier League, pushing them into third place in the Premier League table.
With eight games remaining, United have a huge chance of qualifying for the Champions League. Questions remain as to whether Mr Carrick will be given the managerial role permanently at the end of the campaign. However, qualifying for the Champions League would greatly strengthen the club’s appeal for talent during the transfer window and help them progress. Express Sport brings you the latest news from Old Trafford.
United are planning to revamp their midfield this summer and are eyeing Joao Gomez from Wolves. The 25-year-old Brazilian had been linked with a move to United throughout January, but Wolves did not make a bid due to the relegation battle.
Still, Gomez is expected to leave Molineux this summer, with Rob Edwards’ side in danger of relegation from the Championship. This has led to increased interest from multiple Premier League clubs, including United, which has picked up pace in recent weeks.
Gomez joined Wolves from Flamengo in the summer of 2023 for a fee of £15 million. But his impressive performances for Wolves earned him a call-up to the Brazil squad and his value has risen to £44m since signing a new contract in April last year. Given Wolves’ looming relegation, that price tag could come down in the summer.
Bruno Guimarães talks about “For advanced users”
Another Brazilian United are reported to be planning to sign this summer is Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimarães. According to Reuters, the Old Trafford club are in advanced talks to sign Guimarães in a deal worth £69 million.
The Magpies withdrew from the Champions League this week and are unlikely to qualify for next season’s tournament, opening the door for the 28-year-old to leave. Compatriot Casemiro has already confirmed he will leave United this summer and is reported to have personally backed Guimarães as his midfield replacement, highlighting his experience and leadership.
Initial contact clearly suggests that mutual interest may provide an easy path towards agreement on personal terms. However, there is also interest from Real Madrid, who have long admired the Newcastle captain.
