Manchester United are reportedly in “advanced negotiations” to sign Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimarães, according to Reuters. A move worth €80m (about £69m) is being considered this summer, according to reports, but interest from Real Madrid could put a halt to the move.
The Whites are keen on the Brazilian midfielder from 2022 and were thought to be likely to join him before Newcastle made a big offer to Lyon. However, initial discussions between United and Guimarães’ representatives indicate that both parties are keen to make the move happen.
Newcastle’s exit from the Champions League at the hands of Barcelona has increased the likelihood of Guimarães leaving the club, especially as qualification for next season’s Europe is becoming increasingly difficult. It is almost certain that Guimarães will be brought in to replace the departed Casemiro.
It has already been decided that Casemiro will leave the club at the end of this season, and he has promoted his fellow Brazilian as the ideal successor. United have a number of other midfield options including Adam Wharton, Elliott Anderson, Carlos Baleva and Sebela.
Despite Casemiro still at the club, United’s lack of midfield resources means they will likely need two new midfielders this summer. With Champions League football set to return to Old Trafford in 2026/27, the need for a strong squad becomes even more important.
Having been eliminated in the first round of both domestic cup competitions, United will only play 40 games this season and will focus solely on the Premier League. Since taking over briefly, Michael Carrick has secured seven wins out of nine.
The most recent win came against top-five contenders Aston Villa, with Casemiro scoring his third goal under Carrick. United have since moved into third place in the table, six points behind Chelsea, who sit just outside the Champions League places.
Bournemouth are United’s next opponents, with the game scheduled for Friday night. Some key players will be absent for the trip to the south, with Carrick confirming Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt are still out injured.
