After Senegal were sensationally stripped of the African Cup of Nations title they won in January, Pathé Sis posted an eye-catching message on social media. The match ended in extra time with Teranga Lions winning 1-0 thanks to Papu Gueye’s decisive goal from outside the penalty area. However, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced on Tuesday that the result had been reversed, with Morocco winning 3-0.
The final was overshadowed by unusual scenes in which Senegalese players left the pitch in protest of the decision to award Morocco a penalty in the dying seconds of stoppage time. This came after Senegal’s goal was controversially canceled, sparking outrage among players and staff. Moroccan forward Brahim Dias saved the penalty and they eventually fought back after a 17-minute delay.
The result was overturned on Tuesday following a decision by Africa’s football governing body’s appeals committee. In a statement, Senegal announced that as a result of the players leaving the pitch, “the forfeiture of the final match has been declared”.
Sith, who came off the bench for Senegal in extra time, spoke out on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday night in reaction to the news that his team had been stripped of the trophy.
He simply wrote, “You can add 3 more goals to Iloron (Morocco),” followed by a laughing emoji, a peace sign emoji, and a number of Senegalese flags. “Africa’s champions of 2025,” Sisu added.
