Max Dauman became the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history at the weekend, but Arsenal need to tread carefully after some of his subsequent comments were hilarious
Manager Thomas Tuchel is expected to announce the names of his latest England squad this week. And Max Dauman shouldn’t be in it.
The teenager should not even be in Tuchel’s thoughts, let alone named in his squad. Dauman may have a precocious talent. And when it comes to teenage prodigies, some people need to take a breather.
Scoring one goal for Arsenal, Dauman began to be compared to Lionel Messi, Kaka and Lamine Yamal. The absurdity of the comparisons between teenagers and teenagers shows how football is currently being swept away by a tsunami of excitement and controversial opinions.
They attack us from all angles, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Dauman is 16 years old. He’s not old enough to vote, drive a car or buy a beer in a pub, but he’s old enough to be compared to the greatest footballer of all time. Seriously?

Dauman hasn’t officially turned pro yet. And since they are still young, they need to be accompanied by an adult in the changing room. In other words, he’s still a child.
Arsenal, like football in general, have a duty of care to these young players. This is to allow him to grow, mature, learn and develop at his natural pace. Instead of demanding a call-up to the England squad to play in the World Cup.
Why not let him sit his GCSEs this summer instead?Arsenal need to cherish Dauman, not prostitute him.
Posting him on the club’s official X account, which boasts more than 22 million followers, exposes him to a platform that no one his age should ever experience.
There will come a time when Dauman will be the genie out of the bottle. He will become rich and famous like the others. However, there is no need to speed up this process.
When a player named Theo Walcott was called up to the England squad in 2006, his life changed forever. Thanks to Sven-Goran Eriksson, he ended up playing in the World Cup at the age of 17.
He did not kick a ball in anger in this competition and won fewer than 50 caps and just two domestic trophies during his club career. And there are those who still hope Dauman is the best Walcott.
And those who are now defending him on the biggest stage need to put their feet on the ball and shake their heads at the same time. Because time, and much of it, is on Dauman’s side.
