Chelsea were fined £10.75 million by the Premier League this week for making undisclosed payments in connection with transfers between 2011 and 2018, but avoided a point penalty.

Premier League clubs have reacted after Chelsea avoided a point deduction despite being found guilty of secretly paying £47m in connection with past transfers.

On Monday, it was announced that the Blues had been handed a record fine of £10.75 million by the Premier League, as well as a one-year transfer ban (with a two-year suspension). Chelsea also received an immediate nine-month suspension for registering academy players.

The Blues were found guilty of making undisclosed payments to players, unregistered agents and other third parties between 2011 and 2018, and were handed an eight-figure fine, almost double the £5.5m imposed on West Ham in 2007.

Mirror Football understands that the sanction against Chelsea was increased when the two Premier League clubs were contacted by league president Alison Brittain ahead of their meeting later this week.

Other reports suggest that some executives are questioning why Chelsea were not subject to sporting sanctions.

Bruco, who bought Chelsea in 2022, self-reported the potential breach to the Premier League and said in a statement that the club hierarchy’s “active self-reporting” was taken into account when deciding on sanctions.

Either way, the failure to pick up points caused anger among fans of rival clubs, especially given the success Chelsea enjoyed under previous owner Roman Abramovich during the period in question.

The Blues won the Premier League twice, the FA Cup twice, the Champions League, Europa League and League Cup between 2011 and 2018.

In response to the sanction, Chelsea said in a club statement: “We are pleased to confirm that the club has reached a settlement with the Premier League regarding historic regulatory issues.”

It added: “From the start of this process, the Club has treated these matters with the utmost seriousness and provided full co-operation with all relevant regulatory authorities. The Club welcomes the ‘exceptional co-operation’ from the Premier League and the recognition that ‘without these voluntary disclosures and self-reports, many of the Premier League’s breaches of regulations may not have come to the League’s attention.’

“The club has fully accepted the terms of the settlement, the details of which are published on the Premier League website. To be clear, the nine-month restriction on the registration of academy players applies immediately, but only to academy players who have been registered with another league or EFL club within the previous 18 months.”

“This measure does not apply to current Chelsea players, international players or players applying for initial registration with the Under-9s. We are pleased that this matter has been resolved.”
