Manchester United announced in January that Casemiro would be leaving Old Trafford at the end of the season, but fans are calling for him to stay after his achievements under manager Michael Carrick.
Manager Wayne Rooney has told Manchester United to reverse their decision to let Casemiro leave the club at the end of the season. Casemiro, 34, gave United the lead in Sunday’s 3-1 win over Aston Villa by heading in Bruno Fernandes’ corner.
His £375,000-a-week contract is due to expire on June 30, and the Brazilian captain was substituted in the closing stages as fans begged for “one more year”. United had the option to extend his contract for a further 12 months, but instead decided against it and announced in January that Casemiro would leave in the summer.
However, Rooney wants the former Real Madrid star to stay and admitted he believes Casemiro’s time at Old Trafford is over before he regains his form under caretaker manager Michael Carrick. Speaking today, Rooney was asked if he would reconsider the options in the midfielder’s contract.
“I would do that now,” replied the United legend. “I said early on when I was at Manchester United that I didn’t think he had the legs to go round. I think a few people felt the same way, but I take that back. I think he was really good.”

Fellow pundit Micah Richards agreed, highlighting Casemiro’s improvement since Carrick replaced Ruben Amorim and changed United’s formation to one more familiar to the five-time Champions League winner. “We went back into formation again,” Richards explained.
“If he’s playing two-man with Fernandes and Fernandes is going to have the ball and explore and create, he’ll be left alone. The difference is whether he and (Coby) Mainu are doing their job.”
“100 percent (I would like to convince Casemiro to stay) because he is also very good at set-pieces and just the experience.

“He’s been at Real Madrid and not only has he had that experience in the dressing room, but I think his performances have benefited from that now.”
Casemiro has scored three goals in nine games since Carrick took over, all of which came from set-pieces from Fernandes. The Red Devils manager was asked in his post-match press conference if United could reverse the decision.
“In some ways, I think it’s hard to say, but I think it’s when something is decided. In some ways, the fact that it’s decided makes things a little bit easier and everyone really understands the situation,” Carrick admitted.
“I think the influence he has had since I came here and worked with him and experienced his influence within the team and the big moments and goals, it was a great moment at the end, the connection with the supporters and the respect.”
