Speaking in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, John said: “It’s a very emotional moment. Everyone is saying different things. At the end of the day, it’s the federation that decides whether they play or not. And as of today, the federation has decided that they will go to the World Cup. “They’re our guys and we want them to play. You know, they’ve earned their spot…so we hope they can work out whatever the issue is and be able to play.” Please join us. ”
President Trump recently took to social media to clarify his position on Iran’s participation in this summer’s World Cup, the Mirror reported. Shortly after answering “I don’t care” when asked if he thought the Middle Eastern country should participate, he posted on his Truth Social page: “Welcome the Iranian national soccer team to the World Cup.
“But I really don’t believe it’s appropriate for them to be there for their own lives and safety. Thank you for your interest in this matter! President Donald J. Trump.”
Iran topped Group A in the third round of AFC qualifying and qualified for the World Cup. Replacing Iran is likely to be a complicated process, as Iraq and the United Arab Emirates are the next highest ranked teams in the AFC to not qualify.
Iraq recently defeated the UAE in the playoffs and was scheduled to face either Bolivia or Suriname in the intercontinental playoffs on March 31 in Monterrey, Mexico. Iraq recently asked FIFA to postpone the match, citing many players stranded in Baghdad due to airspace closures caused by the war.
FIFA’s own rules regarding excluding a country from a tournament or replacing it with another are similarly vague. The governing body said it would “at its sole discretion” to withdraw a participating country from the competition and “may decide to replace the participating member association in question with another”.
In recent years, there has been no precedent for a country being withdrawn or expelled from the World Cup, nor has the host country ever barred another country from participating. According to ESPN, FIFA is scheduled to hold a general meeting on April 30, but it is unlikely that a decision on Iran’s involvement will be made beforehand.
