Michael Carrick has reacted casually after being informed that Wayne Rooney wants to remain as Manchester United manager next season. The former England midfielder has made an excellent start to the interim period, winning seven of his nine Premier League games in charge. Since he took over in January, United have picked up more points than any other club in the division.
This has led to calls for United bosses to offer Carrick a permanent job at the end of the season, although their options remain open. Rooney is one who believes the 44-year-old has done enough to earn him a long-term stay at Old Trafford. He made his feelings clear after United’s decisive win against Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon.
Appearing on BBC Radio 5 Live, Rooney said: “100 per cent he should[get the job]. I knew this was going to happen with Michael Carrick. I know him very well, I know his character and his character.”
“We needed a cool head, but we needed someone who knew the field. The players needed love and he gave it to them.
“I’ve seen the players playing better quality and coming together more as a team. We look like a very strong team. Why change?”
However, Carrick was reluctant to comment when asked about Rooney’s comments after the win against Villa.
he said: “It’s not that much noise, right? I’m not talking about Wayne, I’m just talking in general. If you listen to it, it’s just noise. To be honest, it doesn’t affect me one bit.”
“I’m in this position right now and I’m doing the best I can and of course I love my job, but what’s going to happen will happen. Everything is very calm.”

“I can definitely enjoy the win and I’m looking forward to Friday night. But other than that, that’s all I’m really thinking about.”
Despite Carrick’s impressive reign, United have yet to make a decision on whether to hand over the reins to him next season or appoint a more experienced candidate.
Roy Keane believes there is only one option and that does not require Carrick to stay. He told Sky Sports: “I think there are better options. I think he did a very good job in the games where he went in and won the football games.”
“He’s obviously simplifying things, but there was no danger in those games. He had a few free weeks to prepare for the game. It was a good time for him to come into the game and he did a very good job.”
“Hats off to him. If he gets the job in the summer, I’ll say, ‘Good luck.’ But I think there are better options.”
“Other people might be excited about finishing third in the league, but I’m not. I’m not one of them. I don’t get excited about things like that. I get excited when a team is winning trophies and competing week in and week out.”
