Thiago Silva announced the death of his 70-year-old mother and returned to Brazil for her funeral as his former club Chelsea paid tribute on Mother’s Day.
Thiago Silva announced the sudden death of his mother, Angela Maria da Silva, at the age of 70, amid a flood of messages of support for the former Chelsea star.
The Blues are among those to have expressed their condolences to the 41-year-old Brazilian, who continues to ply his trade with Porto.
Silva shared an image of himself and his mother on Instagram, where he announced the news. “Little mom, I can’t believe it. I can’t believe it. How could that be? I will miss you so much.”
Silva is scheduled to travel to Rio de Janeiro to attend his mother’s funeral, which means he will miss the match against Moreirense.
His current employers wrote on social channels: FC Porto has received the news of the death of Thiago Silva’s mother with deep sadness.

“The club would like to express its deepest condolences to the player and all his family at this moment of great shock. FC Porto will always stand by Thiago Silva and send a strong hug at this time of sadness.”
Silva previously played for the Blues, where he continued to defy his age with class performances as the center of defense and helped the Blues win the Champions League. Chelsea also offered their support.
The Premier League club said: “Everyone at Chelsea FC is deeply saddened to learn of the death of Thiago Silva’s beloved mother, Angela Maria da Silva. Our thoughts are with Thiago and all of Angela’s family and friends at this difficult time.”
Silva spent four years at Stamford Bridge, making 155 appearances for the west London side. In addition to the European victories, he also helped the club in the UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup. He originally left Chelsea and returned to his native Brazil with Fluminense.
However, he returned to Europe in December and signed with Porto in hopes of qualifying for this summer’s World Cup.
Silva’s family has endured a difficult time as they try to come to terms with the deaths of two of their loved ones.
The defender’s wife, Bel Silva, lost her father less than a week ago.
