Liverpool have ended the uncertainty surrounding Alisson Becker’s future at the club, with reports suggesting the Reds will trigger the one-year option in his contract to lock him up for a further 12 months. The goalkeeper’s existing contract was due to be signed in the summer, but Liverpool had the option of an extra year after his last contract renewal in 2021, which they have now exercised.
This comes as The Times reported that Alisson is expected to remain at Anfield until 2027. The development follows recent speculation over the future of 33-year-old Alisson, with reports suggesting he is considering a move away from the Reds in the summer on the back of possible interest from Italy.
Juventus and AC Milan were both linked with a return to Serie A for Alisson, who represented Roma before joining Liverpool in 2018, but Liverpool have now made a final decision on his immediate future.
Alisson’s agent Zé Maria Ness told WinWin: “I have just renewed my contract with Liverpool,” seemingly confirming the Reds’ decision to activate his contractual option, although details of the renewal were not disclosed.
Despite several injury setbacks in recent seasons, Alisson has remained a key component of Arne Slott’s team, maintaining his No. 1 status following the signing of Giorgi Mamadashvili last summer.
The Brazilian has previously indicated he intends to return to his home country before retiring, with a return to Internacional, where he started his career, firmly in mind.
“I’ve been talking to athletes who have taken steps to come back, and some have had a good experience and some have not had a good experience,” Allison said last summer. “Everyone will have their own experience, but I especially want to return to Inter. I don’t know when that will be, but I still want to do it at a high level. That’s my plan.”
Alisson’s availability for Liverpool’s next game against Tottenham on Sunday is once again uncertain after he picked up another hamstring problem in training, which meant he will miss the Champions League trip to Galatasaray.
Despite this, Slott remains optimistic about his chances of featuring at some stage in the coming days, with the goalkeeper expected to return to training with his colleagues.
