Brooklyn Beckham previously tried to follow in his father David’s footsteps on the soccer pitch
Brooklyn Beckham was destined for fame from the moment he was born. The first child of world-famous superstars David and Victoria, Brooklyn initially tried to follow in his father’s footsteps, but his short-lived soccer career ended in his teens.
Manchester United star David was still a future England captain when Brooklyn was born in March 1999. A few years later, the eldest son began to demonstrate the skills he had inherited and impressed coaches at a community session run by Tottenham Hotspur.
The family followed David stateside after he moved to LA Galaxy in 2007, so Brooklyn later joined the club’s academy and also trained at Paris Saint-Germain while his father was with the French side. But it wasn’t until David retired in 2013 that Brooklyn began to forge its own path.
academy football
In May 2013, it was revealed that Brooklyn had been training at Queens Park Rangers’ academy, shortly after his father took time away from his career. He was 14 at the time and was also on trial at Chelsea.

Mirror Football understands that Brooklyn is a technically gifted center midfielder and winger who played in a similar position to his father but struggled to fit in with his team-mates. Sources who knew Brooklyn at the time recalled that he was shy and often stood at the back of the group.

As the son of England’s most famous footballer, his early introduction to the sport was monitored by the family’s security team. Due to the unique circumstances and dynamics, Brooklyn tended to be more withdrawn than other players.
When David attended training, sources told Mirror Football that the former England captain had always been polite, but his arrival created a circus-like atmosphere and the session was disrupted. Brooklyn seemed confused by the fanfare surrounding her father.
This is similar to the situation that United academy youngster Kai Rooney was previously in. The teenager banned his father Wayne from attending games on the grounds that his presence was a distraction.
Brooklyn then joined Arsenal’s academy at the age of 15 and was named in the Under-18 matchday squad during his time at the club. In 2021, former Gunners team-mate and current Burnley star Jadon Anthony told Goal: “It was an interesting time with him. He’s a really nice guy and I just wanted to be one of the players.”
“To be fair, we took him in too. He was a good player. He was a right winger like his father. His skills amazed me.”
heartbreaking decision
However, Brooklyn left Arsenal in 2015 due to no scholarship offer and that was the end of his football career. In an interview with ABC News, David recalled a heartbreaking moment in which he acknowledged the toll his son took from being constantly compared to his father.
“I want them (my kids) to play soccer, but I want them to play soccer and be happy,” David said of his children in 2015.
“That broke my heart a little bit. He said, ‘I know every time I step on the field, people say, ‘This guy is David Beckham’s son.’ If I’m not as good as you, then that’s not good enough.’ I said, ‘Okay, stop there… You’re playing because you want to play.’ You play because it makes you happy.” ”
Years later, Brooklyn shared the support her father gave her during such a difficult time. Brooklyn said in 2022, “My father wasn’t sad because he said, ‘I want you to be happy.'” “But of course I was sad. That’s been my whole life since I was literally 2 years old.”
He added: “I thought it would be a little difficult to try to live up to what my dad had done in football.”
family feud
Since then, the dynamics of the Beckham family have changed, with Brooklyn criticizing her parents in a lengthy social media post in January. The 27-year-old has accused football icon David and former Spice Girl singer Victoria of trying to “ruin” his relationship with wife Nicola Peltz, whom he married in 2022.
“I don’t want to reconcile with my family. I’m not being controlled and I’m standing up for myself for the first time in my life,” Brooklyn wrote in an Instagram post.
“All my life, my parents have controlled the press about our family. Performative social media posts, family affairs, and fake relationships have been a fixture in my life.”
He added, “The story about my wife controlling me is quite the opposite. I have been controlled by my parents for most of my life. I grew up with overwhelming anxiety. After I separated from my family, that anxiety disappeared for the first time in my life.”
