If Arne Slott leaves, Liverpool would be “delighted” to welcome Jurgen Klopp back. This comes from former Reds striker John Aldridge, who suggests the German could make a dramatic comeback if Slott leaves Anfield at the end of the season. Klopp spent eight and a half years with Liverpool before retiring in May 2024. During his time with the Reds, the former Mainz and Borussia Dortmund manager won eight trophies, including the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League.
He recorded an impressive win rate of 60.9 per cent on Merseyside, securing 299 wins and 109 draws out of 491 games as manager. After leaving Liverpool, Klopp took a short break before resuming his duties as Red Bull’s global head of football in January 2025.
In this role for the past 14 months, Klopp has guided the strategic vision and growth of the entire Red Bull network, including RB Leipzig, Red Bull Salzburg, New York Red Bulls and Red Bull Bragantino.
Slott, meanwhile, succeeded Klopp at Liverpool, winning the Premier League title in his debut season in 2024-25. But despite investing more than £400m in new players last summer, the Reds face even greater challenges this term.
Slott’s side currently sit sixth in the division, 19 points behind leaders Arsenal, and are battling to qualify for next season’s Champions League.
As Liverpool continue to excel in Europe’s top club competition and the FA Cup, speculation has emerged that Slott could be under pressure if they fail to qualify for the Champions League or win silverware by the end of the season.
Aldridge, who scored 63 goals in 103 appearances for the Reds, admitted he would wholeheartedly welcome Klopp back if the club choose to sack Slott.
Speaking to BOYLE Sports, Aldridge said: “There’s a big charity game at Anfield in a week and a half and I’m on Jurgen Klopp’s staff so I’ll ask him!”
“I think we’ve moved on from Jurgen, but even with Arne Slott gone we want him back and of course you would too, because what he did for us and the passion he brought to the team, the club and the fans was like Bill Shankly.”
“If Arne Slott leaves, we would like him to come back, but it won’t work out that way, right? If he wants to go to Real Madrid, we wish him good luck. We wish him the best. I hope he plays in the substitutes when we play against Liverpool in the Champions League in the coming years!”
Aldridge and Klopp are set to work together for Liverpool FC Legends’ match against Borussia Dortmund later this month, with former Reds midfielder Steven Gerrard among other stars taking part.
