Robbie Keane is leading a three-man shortlist to become Celtic’s next permanent head coach, with Ferencvaros being considered for a potential return to Parkhead, according to reports. The former Ireland international striker has impressed in Hungary, leading them to the top of the domestic league while also securing a place in the last 16 of the Europa League.
His name had been widely discussed for the Hoops position even before Wilfried Nancy’s appointment, but after that ill-fated tenure the club turned their attention back to Martin O’Neill, who has since regained stability. However, the search for a permanent manager continues behind the scenes, with the Guardian claiming that Keane has emerged as the front-runner within Celtic’s hierarchy.
Such an appointment would cause division among Celtic believers. Keane remains a controversial figure in his native Ireland following his association with Israeli side Maccabi Tel Aviv, where he was manager from summer 2023 until November 2024, and will require considerable persuasion, as there are similar reservations among a significant section of Celtic’s fan base.
Competition for Keane is expected to be intense, with his former club Tottenham also closely monitoring the manager’s progress.
Keane is believed to have been approached about the role as Thomas Frank’s successor following his sacking, but is said to have turned down short-term arrangements.
The report said Motherwell manager Jens Bartel-Askou and Wales manager Craig Bellamy are still considering the deal. As for Askou, there are reportedly concerns among Parkhead officials as to whether he is ready to take such a significant step after just one season in Scottish football.
Bellamy’s situation proves to be even more complicated. Wales are involved in the World Cup play-offs, meaning he won’t be available for talks until April at the earliest.
If they get past Bosnia and Herzegovina and then win the final to qualify for the North American tournament, it will probably take a lot of convincing to give up the chance to coach at the World Cup.
Meanwhile, Celtic are focused on recovering from a difficult domestic campaign. They face top-flight Motherwell on Saturday, looking to increase the pressure on leaders Hearts.
