Wayne Rooney has criticized Tottenham Hotspur’s team as the club faces relegation from the Premier League after a series of poor results. Spurs currently sit 16th in the top flight, just one point above the relegation zone with nine games remaining.
Spurs have lost 14 of their 29 Premier League games this season and parted ways with manager Thomas Frank last month, appointing Igor Tudor as his successor. Tudor joined as caretaker manager until the end of the season, but he lost all four games during his tenure, including three in the top flight and one in the Champions League.
The latest setback was a 5-2 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday night, following a 3-1 loss to Crystal Palace in the Premier League a few days ago.
The results have fueled speculation about Tudor’s future at Tottenham, with a number of candidates being touted as potential successors, including former Everton and Nottingham Forest manager Sean Dyche.
Tottenham return to top-flight action this weekend, taking on Liverpool at Anfield. Rooney criticized Spurs’ attitude before the match.
“The players need to look at themselves because I think they are absolutely disgraceful,” Rooney said on the Stick to Football podcast.
“The performance, the attitude, the lack of desire, the lack of fight, the lack of everything.
“I was watching the Crystal Palace game and I said it last week too. I feel really sorry for the Tottenham fans. I look at the Tottenham fans and they’re sitting there and they’re not angry anymore, they’re just disappointed and sad.”
Tudor’s future has been the subject of speculation in recent weeks, despite only accepting the position at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last month on an interim basis until the end of the season.
Despite the rumors, Tudor is still expected to be in Tottenham’s dugout when they travel to Merseyside to face Liverpool on Sunday, with the 47-year-old speaking to the media at Friday’s pre-match press conference.
Tottenham will then face Atletico Madrid in the second leg of the Champions League last 16, but will need to overturn a three-goal deficit to advance to the quarter-finals.
