Chelsea suffered a crushing 5-2 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League last-16 first leg, but Jamie Carragher didn’t hold back in criticizing the Blues.
Jamie Carragher has claimed Chelsea are “a million miles away” from winning either the Premier League or Champions League and will continue to do so until they resolve their goalkeeping crisis. The Blues had a mountain to climb in the second leg after losing 5-2 away to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League round of 16 on Wednesday.
Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior changed his starting goalkeeper for the third consecutive game as he prioritized Filip Jorgensen over Roberto Sanchez. However, the Denmark international did little to repay his manager’s faith, as he missed PSG’s crucial third goal and was unable to prevent PSG’s fifth goal.
After the final whistle, Carragher slammed the Blues for their reinforcements and believes Rosenior will not be successful until they find a reliable goalkeeper. “I’ve been criticizing Chelsea for a long time,” the Liverpool legend told CBS Sports. “But I’m seriously thinking that they can’t go any further until they solve the goalkeeping problem.
“I’ve said this all along, we’ve got a new owner who’s spent absolutely billions of dollars and we’ve got some great players in the team now and I think Liam Rosenior was great in the early stages.

“I thought that Rossenyol as coach tonight caused a big problem for PSG, looking at the way he set up the team. They didn’t deserve to lose because of the way they set up the game and the way they played. But big mistakes cost the centre-back and the goalkeeper.”
“That has been a problem and will continue to be a problem for the Chelsea manager because they are a million miles away when Chelsea are trying to win the Premier League and the Champions League. That’s why they lost tonight, not because they didn’t have great attacking players or because the manager knew what he was doing. They were tactically brilliant tonight.”
“They went down at 2-2 with a goalkeeping error and then the game completely fell apart and now suddenly it looked like they had no chance of winning.”

Jorgensen earned that recognition in Paris after Sanchez started Chelsea’s extra-time win over Wrexham in the FA Cup. But the 23-year-old’s position is likely to be under threat again when the Blues host Newcastle at Stamford Bridge on Saturday before next Tuesday’s second leg.
Rosenior jumped to Jorgensen’s defense in the post-match press conference, saying: “Players make mistakes. Filip wasn’t the first to make a mistake and that’s part of football. Credit to him, he had his hands up in the dressing room.”
“I make mistakes. We all make mistakes. Sometimes it costs more. This is one of those moments. What we have to do for Rob, for Filip and for all the players is to look out for each other. This is a big test of our character.”
