Wolves 1-3 Liverpool: Second-half goals from Andy Robertson, Mohamed Salah and Curtis Jones help the Premier League champions reach the FA Cup quarter-finals
A second-half upset saw Liverpool suffer a shock defeat to Wolves in the Premier League in midweek, knocking Rob Edwards’ side out of the FA Cup, and they took revenge with a 3-1 away win.
Three days ago, Molineux were treated to a late showing from Wolves, who, after some excellent defending, surprised the champions with a late one-two to turn the tide.
This time Liverpool hit two decisive shots in the space of a few minutes. Andy Robertson’s Corker put the Reds ahead six minutes after the restart. The veteran full-back then teed up Mohamed Salah just 95 seconds after VAR intervened to override an on-field offside decision.
Despite Hwang Hee-chan scoring a clean sheet in stoppage time, Curtis Jones stopped the game midway through the second half to score a superb third goal, capping off a better night for Arne Slott’s side. Here are the mirror football talking points during the match…
1) The Reds will take revenge.
Three days later, when the two sides met in the Premier League, Wolves won all points and qualified for the FA Cup quarter-finals. And it was a case of revenge rather than repeat for the Reds.
The first half wasn’t much better than Liverpool’s tough showing in midweek, but they regained their momentum early in the second half. After Salah did some great work on the counter-attack, Robertson curled a superb shot into the bottom corner. Then, four minutes later, the roles changed and Liverpool took more control of the match, with a rampaging Robertson dishing the ball and Salah scoring at the far post.
After that, I never had any doubts about the results. And it was proven.
2) Liverpool keep their cup dream alive
We already know that Liverpool will not finish the season as champions again. But they knew that depending on the results here and against Galatasaray over the next week and a half, they could still finish the season with one or two trophies.
Victory keeps Liverpool in the FA Cup, winning the world’s most famous cup competition and a top-four finish would salvage what has been a difficult second season for Slott. Thankfully, Liverpool still have plenty of room to play.
3) Salah hits the net again
Salah returned to the scoresheet after scoring his first Premier League goal since early November against Wolves in midweek. And while this wasn’t the kind of adventurous, lethal performance we’ve seen week in and week out from Liverpool’s main players in recent years, there were more encouraging signs as well.
Rio Ngumoja was the attacking force in Liverpool’s first half, but Salah was involved in the first goal and was in the perfect position to score the second goal.
Liverpool need to get their talisman back firing on all cylinders as they fight for a top-four finish. One more goal definitely wouldn’t hurt in that regard.
4) Ngumoha is noticeable
As long as he shines brightly for Liverpool, Ngmoha is hard to overlook. The phenomenal attacker outplayed Kodi Gakpo and Salah in the first half and looked the red-shirted player most likely to make something happen for much of the match.
At just 17 years old, Ngmoha’s final results have been volatile, with some final moments not matching the fancy footwork that would have looked out of place on Saturday night’s BBC show, but he made things happen, even when at times doubled up with Wolves’ back five.
It’s clear why fans are dying to see more of this talented teenager. And while no one would want to put the burden on a young man’s shoulders anytime soon, Kodi Gakpo’s less than stellar form on the left wing of Liverpool’s attack could mean we see more and more of Ngmoha by the end of the season…
5) Wolves can hold their heads high
This result should not dampen the mood at Molineux after Tuesday night’s impressive win, even if it may ultimately be too late to retain their Premier League status.
In some ways, going deeper into the FA Cup would have been a welcome distraction from the trials and tribulations of the relegation battle. But you could argue that the cup run is a distraction if there’s any chance Wolves will bounce back.
I’m at a loss about that. What I’m not worried about is that, no matter how heartbreaking the loss may be, they are finally moving in the right direction after a season to forget.
