Michael Carrick has already performed well – even Manchester United’s owner can’t go wrong now

Despite reviving Manchester United’s season, some believe he should not take the job permanently. This is a summary of the strange stories surrounding the club.

Michael Carrick is not a fan of social media. He does not allow people’s opinions about him, which he may have read elsewhere, to affect or influence him, for better or for worse.

He is far too level-headed, level-headed and mature to let his job be defined by the tsunami of fickle noise that will engulf the world of football in 2026. That’s a good job.

Because while his club may have ‘United’ in its name, ‘Divided’ seems more appropriate when it comes to calls for him to take the job permanently.

Anyone who follows the fate of English football’s most talked-about club will know that nothing is ever simple in Manchester’s red half.

And Carrick now seems to embody the chaos and disarray that has beset United of late. Since assuming interim command, Carrick has somehow brought a sunken oil tanker to the surface.

He gave clear instructions to his rudderless troops. He replaced failure and friction with harmony. He rescued Kobi Mainu from Amorim’s deep freeze and revived his career.

He picked Bruno Fernandes in the best position. Lo and behold, he took Benjamin Sesco from a multi-million pound failure to one of the Premier League’s most in-form strikers.

And most importantly, he replaced defeats and draws with victories. When Carrick rode into Manchester to work on Mission: Impossible, United were sixth in the table and hurtling down a dead-end road.

Amorim’s team had won one of their last seven league matches. Less than seven weeks later, United moved into the top three with six wins from seven.

There has been a remarkable turnaround. It is both a complement to Carrick’s managerial ability and an indictment of Amorim’s failures.

However, despite all the above, some still argue that he should not be given the job permanently. Paul Scholes is one of them.

Now, Scholes was a great football player. One of the true greats of his generation. But what he knows about top-level management could be written on the back of a cigarette pack.

What do the detractors of Scholes and his allies want? Who can rebuild the foundations of a winning culture while simultaneously delivering positive results?

Or could United’s reputation be tarnished by a proven winner taking charge? Also known as Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Erik ten Hag?

The simple truth is that no one really knows who can succeed in one of the most difficult jobs in football.

Until you are given a chance to sink or swim. Carrick was given that chance almost two months ago and rescued a club that was drowning in its own mediocrity and entitlement.

And if the club’s co-owners can’t be strong enough to ignore the outside noise and appreciate that Carrick passed the test they set, then they must be even more incompetent than we already think.
