Tottenham’s fall in the standings continues with a loss against Fulham on Sunday, and if relegation is confirmed, the players will be forced to take huge pay cuts due to clauses in their contracts.
Tottenham players could see their wages cut by up to 50% if they are relegated due to a clause introduced during Daniel Levy’s tenure.
The former chairman was known as a shrewd manager and was prepared for the worst. It was seen as a way for the club to protect itself against something that could never happen, but the team’s disappearance is now a real possibility.
Tottenham lost to Fulham on Sunday, their fourth straight defeat, leaving them just four points clear of the bottom three. According to The Athletic, almost everyone in the squad has a relegation clause included in their contracts in north London.
Levy sought to protect the club financially, as clubs that fall into the Championship would see a significant drop in income. That’s something Tottenham will have to take into consideration as the club hasn’t won since December 28.
Igor Tudor replaced Thomas Frank, who had only been appointed in the summer, but the Croatian lost both games, raising the possibility of Spurs dropping into England’s second tier for the first time since 1977.

Since Levy’s departure, Tottenham have signed two first-team players, Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid and Brazilian Souza from Santos. Gallagher returned to London in January on the club’s most lucrative contract.
Tottenham finished 17th last season under manager Ange Postecoglou, but there was always a noticeable gap between the north London outfit and the 18th-placed side due to the quality of the bottom three teams. They finished the season with 38 points, 13 points out of safety, but their performance left a lot to be desired.

Despite their promising start, their struggles have continued this season and relegation remains a possibility. Tudor did not hesitate to criticize the lack of effort and quality from his players after the recent defeat against Fulham.
“When we are in a bad situation, we bring in players, but then we lack the defense, the running ability and the ability to win duels,” the Croatian said. “So what do we do? That’s the big question going forward. It’s about choosing what’s right for this team. Finding the equation, who we want to be and what we can be in this moment.”
